Ale87, The developers are not supporting this game anymore and are just selling a broken product in order to cash in on naive people who would want to support these types of games. Just request a refand and pirate the game. It's the only way to make it work.

I case anyone has tried all of the above solutions and is still unable to run it, I went into Program Files>Steam>steamapps>common>Return to Mysterious Island open the "config.ini" file in notepad and change the line bUseHardware=1 to bUseHardware=0 to switch to software now I can ACTUALLY run the game.

FIX FOR SPEED ISSUE:

I am running the game on Win 10 64 bit and had trouble with the animation speed (it was way too fast).

I fixed the problem by setting the Max Frame Rate for the game in my NVIDIA Control Panel to 23 fps (58 was still way too fast, 20 might be even better).

I set this for the Game.exe that I use to run the game now, because starting the game via RtMI.exe does not work anymore.

Running Win10 64 bit ,started game and mouse didn't work, hit windows key (on keyboard) with game still running, right clicked task bar game icon, right clicked game.exe and set compatablity mode for Vista, checked the disable high DPI settings and run as administrator boxes(apply,ok). Hit taskbar game icon to pull up game and mouse worked,started new game ran for a while and hit save game.Restarted game and rechecked settings and now it has changed itself back to Windows XP (service pack 3), which I had tried previously per thread "crashes on startup" but would not work for me, go figure. Also,game graphics went off to the right side of the screen on restart but after hitting the taskbar game icon again it "fixed itself" and seems to still be running in full screen for now. Nvidia 980 graphics card

Get Windows. MacOS sucks.

It will involve using some kinda Wine "wrapper" for EXEs to run on MacOS. I am currently stuck on a 12 year old MacBook 15" because I'm building a new daily driver PC ... so, until then ... NO GAMING FOR ME LOL

You can still try to play the game via Oracle VM VirtualBox. This is a software that allows you to simulate/run other operating systems.

1. install Oracle VM VirtualBox

2. search via Google and get the iso file of Windows XP 32, but be careful not to download any malware.

3. initialize Windows XP 32 via Oracle VM VirtualBox: How to do this can be found via google. Start the virtual operating system for the first time: Windows XP will guide you through its installation. Be sure to enter a password for the administrator and remember it. This is mandatory for later. After the installation, close the virtual machine. We still need the game.

4. Copy the whole game from where it was installed by Steam to a new folder that you can easily find again. You can name the folder for example "shared folder", because this folder will be used by your actual and the virtual operating system later on. You can then use it to exchange files between the systems.

5. Now set up this "shared folder" for the virtual operating system. Google how to do this. Among other things you have to restart the virtual operating system. If you then want to access your "shared folder", you must not forget to install the VirtualBox guest extension. Googles also that, how that goes.

6. To make the mouse work properly in the game you have to deactivate the "Mouse Integration" in the menu "Input" of VirtualBox.

7. If you have installed the guest extension, then you can find the "shared folder" under "Network Drives" in "My Computer". There you should find your copy of the game. You can now try to run Game.exe.

If you are lucky everything works normally.
If you are unlucky, the sound does not work (a) or the game runs too fast (b).

a) It helped me to set the setting in the game to "Software".

b) You have to start the game as administrator. Right click on Game.exe "Run as..." and select "The following user:". Enter the password you set earlier. The game should start now. For me this solved the speed bug. What else can help, if this does not work, is to throttle the CPU settings via the VirtualBox menus.
