Same here - I can't run it. I get the splash screen, then a full screen white. Then a popup that it crashed (twice), then exits. I tried every compatability mode nad administrator. Still crashes. Im on Windows8. HD screen. Dual screens. Rev 191461 of the game. Also tried French. Verifying the files shows one file is bad, and it will redownload, but it does not do the download.

Now it verifys ok, but stil crashes.

I have a non-Steam copy but applying compatibility mode for Windows XP sp3 to the RtMI.exe executable fixed the startup crash I was having.

You might have to run the game directly from that executable rather than via your Steam library to try that fix.

I'm having the same problem. The game will crash after seeing the Microids logo. I went to the steamapps/common folder and tried running the RtMl.exe in compatibility mode for Win Xp sp3, but the game still crashes.

same problem here (win 7), i changed the compatibility mode in both .exe files - rtmi.exe and game.exe - now games starts via steam

Verify cache did it for me. 1 file needed to be redownloaded.

I have tried all of these solutions unsuccessfully. Any other ideas? I have Win 7 64 bit

Apparently, if you have newer versions of Windows, you've wasted your money on this game.

I also just bought this game on windows 8.1 and can't see the full game window. I can only see a square. I clicked on settings from the start screen, and then apparently can't SEE the bottom of the screen to navigate back to the main menu! Any types on how to fix any of this? How do I force windowed mode??

Hello !
I've seen a post that said : if you force windowed mode in the config file, you can play with no crash.

I am doing this right now and it seems to work ...
Not the best solution but ...

Few things you have to do here depending on your OS; but all are collectively here.

1. Right click the game in your Steam Library and select "Properties". Select the "Local Files" tab and click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". You will notice that 1 of the files is corrupt and will be re-downloaded. This doesn't always happen instantly and you may or may not see it in the download section. If you don't see it, don't worry - It'll happen. Move on, regardless.

2. Navigate to the Steamapps\Common\Return to Mysterious Island Folder. Once there, Right click Game.exe and select properties. Click the compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Select "Run this program as an administrator". Then click "Apply" and then "OK"

3. Repeat this process for the file: RtMI.exe. Selecting BOTH the Compatibility mode as well as the Administrator rights.

4. Setting Windowed Mode - (Optional, in some cases.): Open the file: config.ini with Notepad. Inside, you will find a line that says: "bFullScreen=1" Change this to say 0 (zero) instead of 1. Save the file.

At this point, you're finished, but you CAN NOT run the game through the Steam Library. Instead, launch the file: Game.exe and the game should start. Most won't require Windowed Mode - so try skipping Step 4 first. if it doesn't work, you can change to windowed mode in the .ini and adjust resolution as needed by adjusting the "bScreenResolution" string.

Hope this helps anyone enjoy a wonderful Point and Click adventure!

I am on Windows 8 and I too have been having issues playing Return to Mysterious Island as the game crashed whenever I right clicked within the game (after the initial prompted right click which didn't cause a crash) and sometimes the game just suddenly crashed. I have tried all of the above suggestions but to no avail, but I have found a fix that has enabled me to play the game in full screen (not windowed mode) without any game crashes. It's a bit longwinded but at least it means that I can play the game, although as I am not playing on Windowed mode the screen still flashes a few times when I am initially loading the game, but this hasn’t occurred when I have been playing the game, the game has played great.

First I went to Program files (for me program files x86), Steam, SteamApps, Common, Return to Mysterious Island (open folder)

I then set the game and Config Appender (click on properties) to play on Windows XP Service Pack 2, then in both of the these I clicked run as administrator.

Then I logged into Steam, went to my Library right clicked on Return to Mysterious Island, then clicked on properties, then clicked on Local Files and then I clicked on Verify Integrity of Game Cache, let this go through (it found one issue).

The when you load the game but prior to playing you will see a menu which includes Options if you click on this you will be see a Rendering option which states Hardware I clicked on this to change it to Software, then launched the game as normal and was able to play as normal.

The next issue occurred for me when I had finished playing the game for the day, saved the game and then I came back to the game another day, when I tried to launch the game it always crashed again prior to launching, but I found that just by following the steps above to Verify Integrity of Game Cache on Steam each time before I wished to play the game that it meant that I was able to play the game fine and the Verify Integrity of Game Cache on Steam takes less than a minute to go through for me & all my saved games were stored fine.

I hope this may possibly help others having issues in playing this excellent game.

Cheers
Gina
I did ReliTerino's thing and it didn't change anything...
Any other ideas?
