Ephiam's games often have endings like that.
For instance, in Veniatura, God unmakes you in response to your victory.
He's hinted there may be a second, different ending if you complete the (not yet released) post-game content.

i even found a severance blade after the last boss thinking maybe there might be a way to do something about it, only other thing i can think of is maybe theres something in the forest temple or something that i missed?
game is fun; just that ending stunk, its like the future refused to change ending in chrono trigger.

Love the game. Tons of party comps, tons of build customization, good difficulty curve, not grindy... That being said, the ending feels like an early access "come back for the actual finale in a patch or two" non-ending. The final boss had a very penultimate boss impression, leaving the whole experience without a satisfying resolution.

Doesn't help that wise guy felt like a very RNG roulette fight... First attempt, everyone gets charmed and beat themselves to death. Second attempt, he doesn't even try charm, or seal magic, so I can very easily heal through the piddly damage he's doling out. That such a perfect setup for 'the monologuing badguy gets eaten by the true final boss.'

But apparently there's postgame content planned for the near future? So I'm withholding final judgment until I see where that leads.

Personally, I really like the standard ending, I find it beautifully tragic, you aren't a band of heroes, you're a band of sacrifices, four of many, hundreds if not thousands of souls trapped in the cycle, no different then those who came before you, or after, trapped in a cycle of one's own making. The game had been building up to this for most of the second half after all, really drilling into the player that they are not special, they're merely above average, It's clear from the final boss that the single Wiseman is in fact, just toying with the party, there is zero chance to actually beat all five at once if they were to take the party seriously.

And how this transitions into the True ending for completing the Post Game is also quite good. Because they were literally toying with you, it gives your party the opportunity to sneak behind their backs metaphorically and actually undo their power by slaying Lym'dell, and thus, fight them on (relatively) even footing, using the wishes of those in Scarmonde who truly, truly wish to end their eternal suffering.

Well, I bet you'll hate the True Postgame Ending now.
