ATLYSS
Does fishing really play a role in a game like this outside of being in it for the sake of it?
Unless you can fish up fish to cook into food buffs, or some other useful consumable, I don't really understand why this has to be indie game with fishing number 500. You can argue it's harmless flavor, but does it have to end there? If the effort is going to be put in to have it, some more effort can be put in to develop it into something that contributes to the game's ecosystem in some way. I have no idea how fishing is going to work yet since all that's been shown is a .gif of it being possible, but many indie games include it for "meme" purposes instead of it being a meaningful addition, and I think Atlyss is better than that.

people that log into the game to ERP with minors please don't bother replying, this is a topic for game design giga chads ONLY...this is your warning...or i'll unleash the beast... :CliveDrunk:

I mean we might get a few more weapons with unique heavies and some new skill from it?
I swear if fishing gets added while also ending up as a food buff and easy way to get money... ILL LOSE IT

social thing, webfishing is crazy for that.
When it comes to MMOs and similar games, they usually add in little mechanics like that to break up the monotony a bit. I know this isn't an MMO per say, but it's clearly very inspired by them.

Gamedev is a creative process, working on the core content 100% of the time all the time will eventually lead to at best bad decisions, and at worst burnout, so "side tasks" like this to make it more varied and interesting are beneficial.

Also fishing is a nice side activity to add to keep completionists busy while the rest of the game is being made, and it always can be integrated later in a more important mechanic.

I mean, theirs a lot of potential for a fishing mechanic, it could be a decent way to get some mid level items like in minecraft, or there could be a quest board of some sort where you can get items or money for rare fish, or maybe fish could be a cheaper source of healing items compared to what you can buy from Sally, common fish being low level healing and work better the rarer the fish

I think you're severely underestimating how many people enjoy fishing as nothing more than a thing to do in a game. I agree that it would be way better if it provided a tangible benefit for the player, but if webfishing proved anything it's that people will happily play fishing minigames for the sake of it. In the end, if it doesn't negatively impact the performance of the game in general then there's no real reason to worry about it.

I'd be down for a fun fishing mini-game, even if it didn't do much.

Heck, if Kiseff were to straight up copy the fishing mini-game from Ocarina of Tims, then I would be thrilled. That was one seriously addictive fishing mini-game which I spent hours playing even after I had unlocked all of the rewards and broken all of the records simply because it was fun. It's really sad that none of the future Zelda games had the same style of fishing mini-game.

Beyond that, I'm down for even a basic Animal Crossing style fishing mini-game, if only because it might take some business away from WEBFISHING.

Personally, I mostly see problems.

It could be okay if there are some nice items you can get from it, like making meals that give long term stat buffs for combat. Because that would give it at least a tenuous link to the core gameplay loop, instead of being entirely parasitic.

But, then it also runs the risk of becoming annoying. Because if you don't like the fishing minigame, you have two choices: Either don't do it, and miss out on those buffs, making the part of the game you do like less fun. Or, you waste time playing the minigame you don't enjoy, so you can have those buffs for the part of the game you do enjoy. Neither one is a good situation to be in.

This is why I would rather get all items from within the core gameplay loop, than outside of it. That keeps the game focused, which is a good thing.

If fishing is purely an optional thing, that simply exists to enhance the social side of the game, then maybe it would be okay. But if that's the case, it will most likely end up being ignored by anyone that only plays solo. So then Kiseff has to ask himself: is it still worth the extra development resources spent on it if not all players are going to actually engage with it?

How is that boring? Surely you enjoy fighting monsters and exploring dungeons? Or, are you saying Atlyss is boring? If so, why are you playing it, then?

You know what I find boring? Fishing mini games. Especially when they're in an action game. Hence why I would much rather get loot from the fun thing I AM here for, than a boring thing I'm NOT here for.

If they're gonna add fishing they should at least add player housing too so I can have a private server with my boyfriend and cook together with him :) in the kitchen :) making delicious FOOD and watching a nice movie.

Just going to reiterate that the endless grind of MMO games and similar games usually lend themselves well to minigames like this to break up the monotony. Practically every MMO out there has several.

I think people need to realize that this ISN'T an MMO. Not that I'm against fishing in the game, I just keep seeing people repeatedly miscategorizing the game. It's MMO INSPIRED, but it's just an RPG with Online multiplayer. There's a big difference. Diablo vs. WoW, Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles Vs. FFXIV, etc. I don't think a whole bunch of, direct from MMO, superfluous systems are needed.(*cough* player housing *cough*) Fishing however is a very common minigame in a whole buncha genres in games, so it's not that big a deal to me.

It's an action RPG styled in a similar vein to most MMOs on the market these days. The only thing separating it from an MMO is that there is a singleplayer mode and players can host instanced sessions. Plus iirc the game even states that it's MMO inspired on the store page. I'm also willing to bet that once the game is finished and properly launches that there's probably going to be 1 or 2 primary servers hosted by the dev or people he brought on to help.
Wait what? Fishing?
