Advice on playing mage?
I tried playing a magic focused character and it was wasn't very fun, you don't unlock classes until Lv 10 so you can't really get spells until then unless you get a scroll via random drop, I just think a few scrolls should be available early game for mages. As for the scepter and bell I didn't enjoy using them but that's more personal taste.

Buy fireball from a vendor where the horned pigs roam, don't bother with Spire until you tackle the crescent grove dungeon

Using the scepter is more for finishing off enemies with very little health left, their true power lies in providing magic attack boost on tandem with a magical enchanted shield

Bells are good early game when you are short on money and can't afford burning MP items
if you want a pretty good mage build without sacrificing the fun of playing mage you can try this out: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3400084158

Idk why you disliked both scepters' and bells' attacks so much, but anyway, yeah, when playing a "mage" you can face a no spells problem before lvl 10...

It's probably a good idea to not start with a character you are going to make a mystic. I mean, you are going to get at least 3 characters to lvl 10 for achievements, right? Just stash those scrolls into your chest and your new character will have them from the start.

Also, you can ask other players for it. I was playing with a friend, cryo needle scroll dropped for him in our very first trip to the catacombs iirc and he gave it to me.

And another option is to create an imp, they get siphon leech as a racial skill.

Then you lose out on a free skill slot?
Fluxbolt is love, fluxbolt is life. That's your primary source of mostly single target damage (though it can splash if the enemies are right on top of each other). It gets waaaay better the higher you can get its rank.

Imbue is also a nice buff to have too.

You mean not on a hotbar, but in the... journal of learned skills or how do you call it? Tbh i never had a feeling that there is not enough slots there even as a mystic. One of the racial skills will occupy one of these slots either way, and i think siphon leech is a best starter choice for a mage character. Yeah, i don't use it anymore after becoming a full blown mystic, but i also don't use any of the other racial skills. I know that sturdy is a pretty OP skill, but i don't really need it as a mystic and i definitely don't have a space on a hotbar for it as a mystic.
