How do dyes work?

I don't have a lot of them so I don't want to just use them to test.
1 What exactly do they do (change one piece of gear or all of your gear, do you get to pick what gear)
2 Do they change your character color because I think that's what one of the posts on here said but I might have missunderstood it
3 Do they work on cosmetic gear?
4 I assume you just use them from the right click menu in your inventory or not?

Answer is 4. You just use it, and it auto applies

You use it and it applies to all of your characters equipped stuff, even if you change gear afterwards. It's actually there the moment you make a character (when picking the dye color) and is always present and only changes when you use a different dye, so there's no going back unless you have your original dye on hand.

edit: also only some pieces of gear seem to use the dye color, not everything.

What dye do you start out with? I don't remember dye selection in the character creator so I asssume it's either the same one every time or the color of the clothes you pick at the start.

You select the dye along with the weapon selection during character creation.
