no DRM just a standard cd key/activation it doesn't really do anything after it's installed

We require product activation for the online components and you have the ability to deactivate your product through the interface as well.

That really should be listed on the Steam store page.

How many computers can be activated?

The software is suppposed to be only used on one computer. But if you don't deactivate before removing and use your activations you can activate 3 times and then your key is rendered useless unless you contact Chess Base Support and tell them your story.

That really does need to be on the store page.

Single machine activations on Steam are very annoying.

Many Steam users play on more than one device.

Well, I just lost all interest in this game. First the draconian DRM (we already have Steam, duh), then charging extra for a proper version of the game that actually uses modern hardware (which should be a PATCH, not DLC).

Way to fail.

then go buy the deep fritz package from chessbase for $90 and get the same thing if you think you're getting ripped off
matthew Sep 23, 2014 @ 5:15am
the deep fritz version is more expensive as retail, the reason that fritz is cheaper on steam, because it only had a single core engine, deep fritz anyway else is multi core by default, and is more expensive,

before you say you been ripped off, I highly suggest you do some research

http://shop.chessbase.com/en/products/deep_fritz_14_english

system requirements

Minimum: Pentium III 1 GHz, 2 GB RAM, Windows Vista, XP (Service Pack 3), 7/8, DirectX9, 256 MB graphics card, DVD-ROM drive, Windows Media Player 9 and Internet access for program activation, access to Playchess.com, Let’s Check and program updates. Recommended: PC Intel i5 (Quadcore), 4 GB RAM, Windows 8.1, DirectX10, 512 MB graphics card, 100% DirectX10-compatible sound card, Windows Media Player 11, DVD-ROM drive and Internet access for program activation, access to Playchess.com, Let's Check and program updates

...........................

and I would suggest you check the price, so you see, the DRM is on the none steam version too,

how can you say you been ripped off now?

$54 for the base program + deep fritz 14 on steam vs $75 for the "all in one" deep fritz package on the chessbase site....that's a substantially discounted price point.

oh and you still have to enter a cd key when you buy it from chessbase....steam users are severely confused when it comes to the definition of DRM lol. when it takes more effort to download and crack a pirate copy i just don't get it

DRM?

Having to "phone home" so the dev/publisher know what computers and how many you have it installed to and limit such installations?

No, I think that covers it, that is DRM, regardless of what marketing try to convince you.

I dont see how you can care? It's the same with many other application today.
Windows, Office, Adobe software.
I don't know why people complain. 3 machines should be enough for 99% of the population I guess.

I had a similar issue with Flight Simulator X a couple of years ago. I formatted my machine, bought a new one in a couple of weeks time and there were to many activations. Just had to phone the support and I it was fine.

Nothing wrong with some customer support.
kewlbns69 Sep 23, 2014 @ 6:06am
well here's something you might not know about fritz. once it's installed and activated. there's nothing more to do...fritz will even run without steam on so i'm not really sure what your complaining about. this is probably one of the most "non drm" games on steam
Plaid Sep 23, 2014 @ 9:19am
a three activation limit is NOT one of the most "non drm" games on Steam.
There's a reason other companies stopped using it...

You guys are just fanboys, my god.
Is there some reason to limit the paying customer?

BTW, no one anywhere in this thread said they were getting ripped off.
