Thats not very fair given the current state of the game. The memory leak and crashing issue is a HUGE problem. I personally crash every 5-6 games unless i exit the game and restart every couple of matches. And if you crash you have to be speed freaking racer if you want to get back in before you get the leaver penalty and someone takes your spot.
It's a situation where the needs of many out weight the needs of the individual. 11 other people far out weigh you individually. That's life.
You're going to have to learn one very important life lesson here and now. Life was never intended to be "fair". It's always going to be an uphill struggle to push ourselves to be a better person. If life was fair, we'd all be looking like those humans that appear in the movie Wally where they sit in chairs all day and everything is automated and life is extremely dull and boring.

Better than the alternative, which is a player rage quits or DCs from your match and now you're fighting 5v6.
It's like saying to someone who killed 5 people it's not he's fault but God cuz he didn't make people immortal.
You can't blame players for leaving if there is no penalty for doing it but devs for not not doing anything to prevent it.
Look at paladins, as garbage as it game is at least it always puts you at the beginning of match and if someone will leave in middle of it no one will replace him because it's dumb.
Best solution is to make this optional and give reward if you placed in ongoing match. And double the reward if you win.
The best solution I could think up is probably this. When you have two teams that are not balanced, it will only spawn in the same number of players for both teams, with any extra's sitting out waiting to respawn. So if the teams are 5 vs 6, the team with six will have one person sitting out as a spectator. While spectating, their respawn timer will be frozen and won't count down till another player on their team dies, when they do the one waitings respawn timer will count down and the person who just died will now be waiting to respawn with a timer that is frozen. This will keep the game with a constant 5 vs 5 set up.
When it comes to people waiting though, I will toss in the option that allowed to leave at any time without being punished for it. This way if they don't want to wait till a person on their team dies and then their respawn timer counts down and hits zero before they can play, they can opt out and leave with no repercussions and search for a new match.
This way there will be some choice. Luckily though, searching for games usually goes by rather quickly and you'll probably be in another match in merr seconds.
I also don't invest my entire life into each QP match so if someone does rage quit. I have no interest in suffering a 5v4, but because of Overwatch putting in a leaver penalty in their QP, everyone has to.
If someone leaves. I also leave and move on to the next.
I grantee you that most of the time people leaving will be for selfish reasons. I can't count the number of times in other games I've had a friend drop out, making the claim that something important just happened to pop up and they have to go. Only to find them recuing for another match like I wouldn't notice on the friends list over the past 15 to 20 years I've been playing video games online. There's absolutely no way you'd be instant requeuing for a new match if it was actually important. You'd be busy not touching the game at all for a good 15 minutes to an hour.
When it comes to game abandoners though, they are unfortunately the direct cause for why matches become unbalanced. I do feel that some form of punishment required to attempt to either deter them from rage quitting more times afterwards, or even go as far as drive them away from playing the game entirely. There's always other players that will gladly take their spot on the waiting list to play matches when they're gone. This game has absolutely no shortage of players here.
Punishments don't have to be super severe either. Maybe just throw them on a low priority list for the matchmaker where it'll take them longer to get into matches. Maybe put them on a list with other people who frequently rage quit out of matches constantly and have it that only those people get paired together. This would actually give them first hand experience when they're on the receiving end of dealing with people who abandon them during a match, what other people have to suddenly "deal with" just because someone only believes that their fun is the only one that matters, everyone else can suffer for all they care. Then make it if they can stay in matches from start to finish between 2 to 5 times in a row, it'll take them off that list and they can continue playing with everyone again.
There are multiple ways to handle abandonment penalties.
Good luck with getting back in in time with that stupid process of loading shaders which always takes like 1-3 minutes at every start up lol.
