I've known it for a while. There's also a habit I see a lot of people who do own the game, but private their accounts to hide that they've only played 5 minutes worth just to try and pretend that they've played enough to have an opinion on the game that people like to do now-a-days. Be wary of people who private their accounts with the mouse near the game.

Yeah for most people you should just not play the game on public wifi.
And as for why a hacker would well hack a average Joe well I can think of a few reason like stealing credit card information with a key-logger, stealing passwords or making you PC join a botnet.
