Marvel Rivals: A Masterclass in Mediocrity (and copying from Overwatch)
Alright, folks, gather around. It’s time for a little education. I know, I know—some of you might not be ready for this. You’re probably still basking in the glow of Marvel Rivals’ flashy trailers and the dopamine hit of seeing your favorite superheroes on screen. But let’s be real here: Marvel Rivals is, objectively speaking, a bad game. And before you start typing furiously in the comments, hear me out. I’m not here to insult anyone (though I can’t promise I won’t be a little condescending—it’s just who I am). I’m here to enlighten you. Because, let’s face it, someone has to.

First, let’s talk about the gameplay. Or should I say, the lack of gameplay. Marvel Rivals is, at its core, a shallow attempt at cashing in on the live-service model. It’s a hero shooter, sure, but it’s one that feels like it was cobbled together by a team that read a Wikipedia summary of what makes a good hero shooter and called it a day. The mechanics are uninspired, the abilities are derivative, and the balance is… well, let’s just say it’s about as balanced as a one-legged stool. But hey, I’m sure some of you enjoy the thrill of pressing the same three buttons over and over again while your screen fills with particle effects. Congratulations, you’ve found your game.

And don’t even get me started on the monetization. Oh, wait, I’m already started. Marvel Rivals is a textbook example of how to squeeze every last penny out of your player base without actually delivering a product worth paying for. The battle pass is a grindfest, the cosmetics are overpriced, and the game is clearly designed to exploit FOMO (that’s “fear of missing out” for those of you who aren’t as well-versed in gaming industry tactics as I am). But sure, keep telling yourself that spending $20 on a recolor of Spider-Man’s suit is a good use of your money. I’m sure the executives at Marvel are very grateful for your contribution.

Now, let’s talk about the story. Or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Marvel Rivals doesn’t even try to justify its existence with a compelling narrative. It’s just a bunch of heroes and villains thrown together in a generic arena because… reasons? I guess? I mean, I get it—writing is hard, and coming up with a coherent plot that ties all these characters together would require actual effort. But come on, is it too much to ask for a little world-building? A little context? Or are we just supposed to accept that Doctor Doom and Captain America are fighting because… well, because the game needs them to?

And let’s not forget the technical issues. The performance is inconsistent, the matchmaking is a mess, and the netcode is about as reliable as a paper umbrella in a hurricane. But hey, I’m sure some of you are perfectly content with rubberbanding across the map or getting disconnected mid-match. After all, who needs a smooth, stable gaming experience when you can have the thrill of wondering whether your next match will even load?

Look, I get it. Some of you are die-hard Marvel fans, and the idea of playing as your favorite characters is enough to blind you to the game’s glaring flaws. And that’s fine. Enjoy what you enjoy. But let’s not pretend that Marvel Rivals is anything more than a cash grab dressed up in spandex. It’s a game that prioritizes style over substance, profit over polish, and hype over heart. And if you can’t see that, well… maybe you’re not as discerning as I am. But hey, that’s why I’m here—to help you see the light.

So, go ahead. Keep playing Marvel Rivals. Keep defending it. Keep spending your hard-earned money on it. But just know that while you’re doing that, I’ll be over here, playing games that actually respect my time, intelligence, and wallet. Because, unlike some people, I know the difference between a good game and a bad one. And Marvel Rivals? It’s definitely the latter.

You’re welcome.

No, you're here, posting screeds from chatGPT and farming jesters.

Lots of people recently are calling posts out for using chatgpt. Im old and dont use any AI but would like to be able to spot it when i see it. Could you help me understand how people are noticing it? Is it just the way it talks?

I would recommend spending an hour or two with chatGPT and just get a grasp of what it is that it can do.

You could probably have it spit something like this out by prompting it with...

"Please write a negative forum post about the video game Marvel Rivals. HIghlight that the game is derivative and that the developers are greedy. Point out that there is no lore and the game doesn't even try to explain itself."

And you could then refine it further by asking it to be more one way, or less the other way. Give it more information. Ask it to be more general... It's really impressively versatile and could help weaponise your presence online, but it's also bait for morons who will give up on verifying the information they get from it and earn their Darwin awards...

Anyway, I've had it rewrite CVs, write cover letters, letters to utilities, doctors, landlords, used it to help program scripts and plugins for After Effects and Blender and a bunch of other stuff.

Nice try with the semantics.

I didn't say you wrote a single comment saying that anybody who criticizes it etc is a baiter.

What I'm saying is, if someone does post something critical, you seek out that thread or comment and call the person a baiter or troll.

Are you denying that? How many people have you accused of being a tighty-whitey alt account and therefore a troll/baiter? And in how many threads talking badly about the game (for whatever reason did you post in accusing that person of trolling? Wanna go through your posts together or can save the time and you stop playing semantics?

I never said you don't criticize the game yourself. Both things can be true at the same time, you realize that?

Now you bring up something totally unrelated. I engaged in that post because he didn't have a proper counter response besides an ad-hominem. My response is perfectly legitimate, your response was borderline tinfoil hat terrority.

Cheerleading? It's funny how you bots always malfunction after being broken down.
Have you seen their posts ? I'm sure you can stalk them too if you're so admiring of me. If someone is going to post about making in-depth critique of something, you'd expect them to reply to other people who would critique their argument or agree with their premise. Instead, it's nothing more than engaging with yes-men and, unconstructive and unrelated comments, rather than engaging with other people's critique. This is nothing more than a rant because of that. And whenever i see these so called "critical critiques of the game" i read their interactions, and they always follow the same behaviour and patterns that are very reminiscent of, or just straight up rage/engagement bait.

You go online and you try to have a conversation about Marvel Rivals but nobody wants to talk about the game, they just want to argue about ChatGPT or logical fallacies.

There's gotta be a forum for you guys to discuss these things, so that the people who actually want to talk about the game can TALK ABOUT THE GAME.

I don't want your links to logical fallacies. Don't want your links to AI text detectors. Stay on topic, or go somewhere else.

The main post's points had substance, but instead of what OP claims they want to do here, they do not show it at all in the thread in general. Instead it's a cesspool of blabbering and OP is fueling it.

Don't kid yourself, thinking mighty of yourself too much might hurt. Cheerleading for the OP too is a bit weird.

yes yes, refusing to hold conversation on the grounds the other person must be a troll. Another common reaction of those that cant hold discussion properly. You havent been back on topic since you complained about people being off topic. This discussion has become a joke, your not even trying.

Maybe cheerlead for someone else buddy pal. I call them out for what they are.

You really don't get it, do you. You try talking about stalking and other nonsense, instead of facing reality.

I came here without any involvement. I clearly made a joke about reporting you and your first thought was to call me an alt-account.

Even without looking at your profile, do you really expect me to take you serious after that?

And now I'm suddenly cheerleading for someone. lol He made a perfectly valid point. You people cry when there is no mouse icon, claiming the person can't judge the game if he hasn't played it. But when someone like him has actual hours invested, he is still not qualified to have an opinion and is just salty.

People like you always flip the goal post.

So enjoy your pathetic interactions on here bucko.

This is the part that frustrates me. My number of hours should show that I've taken the time to truly experience and learn the game, and hopefully shows that I'm as passionate about gaming as the rest of you. But instead, it's just another excuse some people will use to tell themselves they don't have to listen to me.

We live in the era of people just believing what they want to believe. We don't seek out truth anymore, we seek out excuses to ignore things we don't want to hear.

This makes me sadder than any of the wonderful and very clever insults they're thrown (but don't fret, you guys, those make me real real sad too)

Marvel Rivals, like all games, should be better. We want the same thing. There's no reason to fight about it when we could be working together. Like I've said a million times, I'm here to help you learn what needs to change about the game. It doesn't have to die the way that it's going to. WE can save it.

There's a lot of people in this thread who would argue that that was my actual objective. I don't know why they would argue that, but I can't make sense of everything.

THANKFULLY, people are catching on with the game's obvious attempts to maximize engagement and retention over player experience. My post might not be popular now, but I do think it will go down as an early sign that more people shouldn't have ignored.

Do you have shares on Blizzard?
I don't understand the will of having this game dead...

Having a strong competitor is good for all players, I want this game to succeed so blizzard has to actually improve Overwatch.

People seem to only see the little picture and end up missing the big picture.

I do too, that's why I'm talking about it's failings. We can't just hope a perfect competitor comes along. We need to take whats available and improve it to last.

Thank you for your consideration, it means a lot. Speaking of which though, does anyone know how to turn off the Steam Community Awards email notification? I keep getting emails every day saying "You got 7 community awards for your discussion topic" and I'm like "OKAY OKAY I GET IT, I'VE GOT AWARDS AND STEAM POINTS". YOu don't have to tell me every single day.

But I can't figure out how to disable it. Does anyone know?

I'm going to go practice my Spider-man gameplay in the meantime. I am haard stuck bronze so I keep missing my web shots.

We're locking this thread as it has devolved into non-productive argument. Thanks for your understanding.
