Is WS simply a better Magik?
He's ranged.
He can headshot.
He hits hard(er).
He has higher burst and dpm potential.
He gains overhealth by just using abilities rather than hitting foes.
He has a dash that doubles as damage/cc, same as Magik.
His passive is better and the overhealth buff is built-in to his kit.
His team-up passive is way better. (And her's practically useless, also doesn't affect herself)
His ult is better to get picks while hers is more about putting pressure.
He doesn't relly on knowing internal cooldown gimmicks to deal "good" damage.

Feels like she relies entirelly on her dash connecting in order to deal respectful damage (praying that enemy supports aren't on top of their game) and outside of that she can be safely ignored by the opposing team.

What am I missing here?

they're different characters that play differently, i don't think they're similar enough to really be considered direct alternatives to each other. that said, ws is objectively better than magik, but that isn't saying much of note because a majority of the dps are better than her (i don't know if i'd say she's the worst in the game, but she's certainly not good). magik is very weak, pretty much relying on the enemy supports being bad at the game like you mentioned, and i would argue she's in need of some buffing. her ult especially is extremely underwhelming and for some reason has an eternity of startup leaving her super vulnerable, forcing her to either hide somewhere and use it (and then waste a good chunk of the duration on positioning) or wait for her team to distract the enemy team long enough for her to use it (which is a bit more reasonable, to be fair).

her bread and butter combo is slow enough that supports with good reaction time can basically shut it down completely, and without it she's even less capable. it's really unfortunate because i really enjoy her playstyle but as she is now it's effectively throwing to pick her over most other dps (i find psylocke tends to fulfill magik's role way better most of the time). i hope she gets some buffs in the future, but i'm also a little worried because i feel like melee characters are pretty difficult to balance, we'll have to see i suppose.

...or maybe it's a skill issue on my part and she's fine, i dunno lol.

I made the direct comparison because their whole kits revolve around gaining overhealth to brawl/assassinate targets (and get out if needed), yet WS is just better in every way I can think of so far.

She doesn't deal good damage (neither burst nor dpm) and at best she plays more like an area denial off-tank (with 350hp less than Thor) than an actual DPS, which is strange.

I feel like if her minion had better radius, duration and damage it would make her feel better overall without touching her primary damage, for a start. Or maybe allow two minions to be on the field together, denying a large area or piling damage on stuck targets.

I've tried using minions to at least scare off Punisher turrets but it barelly tickles him.
At least it would improve her one utility of denying space and delaying anyone attempting to chase her. As it stands I don't see a point to her kit... not to mention that it feels super clunky to play, on top of that.

Magik does better against 3 healers then bucky.
You can save someone from a bucky
You cannot save someone from a magik.
Not only that but magik has more ability to get out of fights as well.
Theres a reason her winrate is alot higher then bucky's
magik is very team dependent, if your team is really bad and the enemy team has a brain you are limited in your engagement options, but she is really good if you have people supporting you as she has something bucky doesn't have, i frames
