It's Takedowns/Deaths/Assists. As long as you do more than poke someone, you get a takedown.
It should be an assist if you help bring down an enemy, but aren't the one that lands the killing blow. This is such a weird decision to not do it this way IMO.
I think they made the Kill stat what we would normally call kills+assists together in one stat to make players feel better about themselves. Having kills be a big number makes em feel better and play more. Final hits and number of deaths are much more telling stats. Just my take.
What people often mean by kills, ie, when you finish off a target, the game calls a "Final Blow", and it is also tracked.
By the way, the idea that Final Blows are all that matter is a bad one. By far the most important thing is that your team secures eliminations and having characters focus fire down targets is the correct way to play the game.
