Might want to wait for the full 5000 series to be out to see all the benchmarks though.
5080 does seem like a dissapointment though, barely any better than the 4080, the only reason I would buy the 5080 over the 4080 is the multi frame generation, and if you can find one near the price of the 4080.
But idk, are you getting good frames with the 3080? If so just keep it, its not a bad card- The 6000 series MIGHT actually be a real upgrade.
Plus once the full 5000 series is out you might be able to pick up a cheap 4080 or something, if your not interested in multi frame generation then it MIGHT be good value, or even the 4090, but who knows.
TLDR: depends what fps your getting now
That's what I did a year ago with the 4090, paid $1450 before taxes and got a NIB open boxed "used" 4090. Still had warranty card and plastic wraps on the gpu, dude who ordered it the first time probably opened the box and sent it back lol. He is the real hero.
For what its worth my 4090 over clocks to 3 Ghz without any thermal or stability issues, significantly faster than the base average 5090.
Might not be a bad idea to see if you can pick up a used 4090.
TLDR, I'm not impressed with the 50 series, specifically the 5080. I think the 4080 super or 4090/5090 are much better choices. But that's just me.
As someone who owns a top 5% benchmarking 4090, the 5090 doesn't impress me at all and honestly I think its kinda rubish at the asking msrp.
Edit: It's a terrible time to be buying a GPU, trump is putting import taxes on Taiwan so I would buy now before prices go up even more.
If you're playing on a 3080 - especially the 12 gig version I would just stick with that for now. Lots of games will fully utilize what it has on offer but should generally provide a very good gaming experience overall. My kid has a 3080 on her desktop and she loves it.
If you aren't using frame gen I wouldn't bother upgrading yet. 5080 isn't enough of a jump wait for the next line of cards in the family.
Yes the frame gen has less artifacting, but uses TWICE the gpu as before.
Just the upscaling seems zero different, but maybe there is some mild visual difference, but I dont see any less GPU/CPU usage so I dont know if its worth it.
But the reason I cant reccomend upgrading is is alt-ctrl-deleted to check resource usage midgame and it froze up my pc, everything went black and then it put me out to the windows login screen.
So yeah beta is beta for a reason, but who knows if they will fix any of this with the full version in 11 hours
Maybe I was on the unstable J branch before, havn't had a problem since updating to the newest driver and forcing K.
It IS a pretty significant graphical upgrade- But yeah the frame gen still seems broken, I dont even get it but native I draw about 210watts and use 60% gpu but with frame gen it uses about 130watts and uses 75% gpu? That math doesnt even make sense.
Also the frame gen latency is like 35ms compared to my usual 10ms, only 2.5% of a second more but just not worth it since I am hitting my monitor hz cap native anyway, I guess this would be useful if you have like a 3000 series and are okay with the input lag?
Still, I am lowkey tempted to switch back to Preset E, it uses less resources and the game looks fine and I GUESS has better 1% lows? Dunno, I am really enjoying the enhanced picture quality at ultra performance dlss though :)
/rant
There is some minor visual improvements to K over J too
Ultimately K does seem the go-to right now, everyone should just play on ultra performance with K imho, even with a 5090 OC, but thats just my opinion, some people like bloom and garbage
