Pretty sure it works out that she's existed as Captain Marvel for longer than she's existed as Ms. Marvel and longer than Mar-Vell was ever "the" Captain Marvel lol.

Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel in July 2012 in a comic series written by Kelly Sue DeConnick Which was Also the Same Year they killed off the Superhero Mar Vell in that Comic. But Most people don't care for that and take this retcon as unoriginal.

Captain Marvel Mar Vell on the other hand is a long established character first appeared in December 1967 with long standing appearances and comics he is the OG and the real deal and Carol Danvers his love interest that became Ms. Marvel.

Edit: Those 2012 Comics failed Miserably and are a tiny blip in Captain Marvels History, the so called ''buzz'' most recently netted Disney a major Loss at the box office.
