His basic attack is a last resort when you have literally no other options.
If you haven't already, turn up your sensitivity so you can 180 faster than they can. Even on controller I'm faster than most players I've fought.
He's an assassin, so pick and choose your targets and don't try to take on groups if it's avoidable.
If I'm going after a single target I usually open with the kick, so that when they start to panic I have both spears available for the subsequent marks after each Spirit Rend hit. If it's a cluster of 2-3 people I open with the spear so I can hit multiple Spirit Rends back to back.
Save your Ults for those situations where you miss a Spirit Rend and kick is on cooldown. (or you fell victim to his hoitreg bug that doesn't reset Spirit Rend when it should) The Ult will reset your cooldowns so even if it doesn't kill them you have another Rend to kill or escape with.
Widows, Hawkeyes, and Scarlet Witches are your best prey. SW is easy kills in general for BP, Hawkeye you will win more than you lose against and I often keep them trapped in their spawn making the battle on point a 5v5 for awhile, and most Widow players don't have their sensitivity high enough to keep up with BP, though you may occasionally run into the respectable really good ones.
Also Punisher can be a great snack, as long as you can get the drop on him so he isn't already waiting with a shotgun; shotgun will wreck BP but if you can hit him twice before he can switch to it, you're probably going to win the fight.
Always be flanking. Generally you want to sneak to the backline using the side lanes in maps and be selective with your targets, though sometimes your team will need help in mid or on point, just don't try to make that your main focus.
You're rarely ever going to have big numbers or get MVP, but all that matters is that you are impactful in the battles and do the best to help your team. I measure how well I did with him by how much damage I did versus how much I took, and to some degree, whether or not my k/d was positive. He spends so much time traveling and selecting targets that comparing him to the other DPS' on the team is not a good measurement.
