Am i reading the ranked system right, for beginners like me below gold we can come up against players of any rank? Doesn't this seem a bit broken. I've just played a match and we got absolutely stomped. Couldn't even get out of spawn. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Bronze and silver can play with gold. That's it. You won't play against someone in plat. Everyone did get a rank reset of 7 divisions though, so you could in theory have someone who was plat in your lobby. Hopefully this answers your question.

Sort of, you can make a group and queue as such with any rank below Gold.
Matchmaking also is not very accurate and is easily allowing +/- 1 rank even when solo queuing.
