Halo 2 was the first one to introduce game bans as well, but you could appeal it if you told them that your internet cut out and it was out of your control. The problem there was that people start saying that every time even when they did just leave or just pulled their ethernet cord. It got so bad that they decided to change it that if you leave for any given reason you get banned now, even to this day.
This is the same type of situation with crashes... People would force crash their computer to avoid getting banned, so they decided to make it that if you leave in general you get the ban now.
