He's used a lot at GM levels well with Hulk. Hulks usually banned not Iron Man tho.

"Do you have to use cover effectively to make him work well?" Yes.
Though at ban levels of comp, where Hela and Hawkeye often get removed, it can be less hairy, or so I hear.

Yes, that's the best gameplan for Iron Man. You'd want to do it at angles away from your team, while at angles your long ranges strategists can see you. Harass to build ult, unless you can confirm kills with empowered beam.

I usually play him lower to the ground just to give my support a better view.

That said, a Palladium Microalloy Man would be way stronger.

ok ok. Cause I feel like such an easy target in the sky, especially to ranged heros with any normal gun who can just easily take me down in 2 seconds if I am not looking for cover quickly.

This is because those are his hard counters. Iron Man does not get to have fun when those types of heroes are at play. Especially Hela and Hawkeye. They are priority 1 if Iron Man goes in for a kill
