Is this game a good intro to the genre?
I mostly play turn-based single-player games. Think Slay the Spire, or Baba is You. I'm an older gamer too. All that is to say that I'll start out pretty weak, and don't know how long it'll take me to get decent (if ever).

I'd like to give this game a try, but don't want to ruin the experience for other people by bringing the team down.

Yes i would say so. It's casual enough so you can enjoy it, and it's complex enough to keep you entertained. Plus it's free and it's full of popular super heroes that you most likely know, love or at least familiar with.

Also if you are really nervous about the others you shouldn't. There are plenty of new players like you, worst case scenario you can play against bots too.

with how easy it is to pick up and play I'd say give it a try, plenty of people got into the hero shooter genre largely due to the character design alone
The characters are fairly easy and quick to pick up on in regards to how they play. So in all honesty yeah.

Plus, you can practice each character by yourself in one mode, and play against vs AI bots in another to actually play them against non living opponents before hand, which helps with understanding them and improving yourself first.

Not to mention it's free to play, so there's always that. You don't have to worry about wasting money on a product you weren't able to get into.

You can play custom games and fill all spots except yours with AI bots so you can learn any characters you want in an environment that has no chance of impacting anyone else. You can even adjust the difficulty of the bots as you improve until you feel ready to play with others.

And there is no way you are the worst player, don't sweat it too much. just turn of voice chat in the options and chill and have fun.

No it's not, if you want to play this type of genre I recommend you play Overwatch 2 instead.

Long answer: No
If you play casual fast games, yes, you can try it, matchmaking places you with console players thx to crossplay and it wont be that hard for you, i suggest testing all characters at least to "see" what every one can do and their role, once you start playing you'll get destroyed or destroy the enemies, you'll investigate the roles deeper, you'll progress, will you keep playing casuals? idk, if you go to competitive you're gonna get a burnout and probably quit or return to casuals, but you'll enjoy it.
