I'm very pro Marvel Rivals, but as a solo player, ranked mode is showing big problems for longevity
Hi all. I'm a solo player who plays mainly support/tank in ranked. I'm not interested in quickplay as unless player ability is balanced I don't enjoy matches, especially when there is a clear difference in team ability. I've played a number of hours over the holidays, around low diamond/high plat, and although I enjoyed the experience at the beginning, I find ranked really erratic in terms of match quality and balance to the point at which it is interfering with my enjoyment of the game substantially. From one game to another, the match balance is normally wildly out with very few close games. Furthermore, I'm finding that in a substantial amount of games you get DPS players that wont switch and so a number of games you'll get DPS heavy fail teams who don't care about a balanced team and actually haven't got experience in doing support or tank, which you would think shouldn't be happening at this level. Once there are a number of these players in the same team, it's gg from the beginning, and you feel your time is being wasted having to go through the match to be told the loss you know you're going to get and can't do anything about. The match quality has become very steam-rolly and so you feel pretty much bored and useless playing in these matches. There shouldn't be this inconsistency of quality from one game to the next. Also, I can't see which teams are in pre-made stacks, so I don't know if the game is providing a good experience for solo players by making these fair. This is a big turn off for me and kind of stinks of the old dilapidated man called Overwatch (2 lols) that made a point to deprive players of information to see for themselves whether they are being balanced fairly in a match: I seriously recommend to Marvel Rivals that they don't copy this anti-player approach to gaming as you end up (like Overdead) with players that want you to fail. Will Marvel Rivals acknowledge there is a problem with their ranked mode for solo players and do something to continue making it enjoyable and worthwhile? Otherwise, I don't see a point in the game mode for people like me, and hence the game.

I explained for me I don't enjoy games unless there's a balance in teams and people are of a roughly equal level. I don't speak for people who play quick play because once I've learned the mechanics of a game at a basic level, i don't like to continue in that game mode. I only like play games which have consistent match quality and my experience is that rivals is not great at doing this at plat/diamond level.

I've never had a matchmaking game give me balanced teams. How is it balanced if one solo queue team is full of new players and the other team of solo queuers has significantly better players in it. The matchmaker just knows that they're all close to the same rank at best usually... It doesn't know individual skills. People may play non seriously one game because they don't feel like trying and derank, only to turn around and then sweat their asses off and absolutely demolish the other team the next...

You probably have a better chance of getting actual balanced games with premades then you do with randoms...

think the only realistic way to get balanced games is if people were matched up with actual people who can ask questions and what not and observe how people play, then form the tournament tree based off that. Since they'll be able to get more information out of the people actually participating then any matchmake AI could.

clearly not if you want perfect balance in every game you want to play, perhaps multiplayer isn't for you then?

if you're fighting fair and square with the enemy team then you've already lost, you need to tip the scales in your favour to win

That doesn't answer my question... I'm not asking how do you win matches, I'm asking how to you have a balanced game with a matchmaking ai...
I've found games with good competitive balance, so, again thanks for jumping to conclusions about what I should or should not do, but your conclusions don't equate to real life experience.

you aren't listening, this isn't about balance, this game is about tipping the scales in your favour, you can switch out you character at your spawn point, stop trying to play fair with "Meta characters and team compositions" and start picking counters. this game is so chaotic that it's impossible to have a balanced game

1. I was asking a question in that reply I made. I'm not demanding anything at all in it.

2. I found a hundred trillion dollars under my bed last night. I'm sorry, but I find it difficult to believe that you actually have had this happened when I haven't experienced once in the 20+ years I've been dealing with match making ( or whenever Halo 2 came out on the original Xbox ).

So you're wasting my time then. Since in that response is more of a sperate question from what I was talking about early. I'm already done with that conversation as I mentioned it wasn't going anywhere and was a waste of time to continue.

OP I'm not sure why you overlooked my earlier post. I greatly exaggerated to be cheeky, but if the hours were adjusted, then my suggestion would help the problem.

Require a few hours and a few characters on each role to play competitive. Then there'd be far less one trick dps, and even if too many still did that, they'd understand the roles better.

Aside from that there needs to be more incentive and flashy visual and audio cues and a point system for the non dps roles.

Give a small ult boost to a Strange who blocks an ult, give a small ult boost to the healer who saves people from death, and have Galacta call that out in game and those roles will feel better.

There's more they can do on top of that but it'd be a good start. Maybe some free cool skins. Lots of potential incentives.

I agree with the entirety of your perspective btw. These hero shooters do not incentivize the roles equally, nor do they make them fun enough. And you're absolutely right that in lower elos the non dps roles often can't swing enough matches to climb. And they're already the most stressful roles since they get the bulk of the blame.

I've got a lot of hours on tank and healers and I'm burned out but too many games I'm still forced to play them unless I want to get stomped.

Unfortunately, we can't really get these devs to pay attention so unless enough people create a stink about it, our only option is to quit.

And after we quit, the one tricks will either quit or keep complaining until more people quit. There needs to be both incentive in other roles and a requirement to play the other roles from time to time.

One tricks are great until they're countered then blame everyone else and make the whole experience miserable.

Hey man, sorry yes I agree that playing different roles should be a requirement for entry, as it's necessary in order to play a team game. I think also they should just separate the ranks out according to role, and make it more performance based rather than just win based maybe. For example if people in your team hard threw but at least you tried as much as you could, you would be credited for that. Tbh I think if a fair system is not in place people will just get bored quickly because normally an unfair system means just having no control over the experience, which equates to a repetitively frustrating experience, which then moves you onto another game in a very saturated market (for example, I have 3 other potential games on the go I can go to if I find that the game is playing me rather than I am playing the game). This is something that overwatch never really learned since the 2 was added, and now they've totally crashed as a company and can't turn back from their poor decisions.

Yup that too.

I made some edits and got a little more descriptive. There's a lot of ways to improve competitive but unfortunately it's out of our control.

I completely agree. What would you do to solve the issue?

I would like a role queue that doesn't allow squads over 4 to use it. Maybe that is too many, but it would solve some of the issues. You would have a fully functional team without having 4 people insta-lock DPS without being willing to switch. It also allows solo's to queue for what they are comfortable with, without receiving any pressure to play something else.

The issue with the DPS stems from how OP they are. I like that they are OP, but it makes them easy to play. Someone "not-so-good" at the game can pick one up and dominate, which feels good. This tends to mean that these players swarm to DPS and can't play anything else/don't want to because it doesn't feel as good and isn't as easy.

Unfortunately, full DPS teams get rolled and are not viable.

I would love to hear some other thoughts on this, though.

Open queue could be for full teams of people grouped up together, which would provide a competitive space for them, while protecting solo's from getting squashed by them.

Role queue could also be great if you had a separate rank for every roll, meaning you could try DPS, tank, or heals without ruining your overall rank. Sometimes I wanna play tank competitively, but I don't want it to effect my main rank. Quick match is not something you play competitively, though, and can't be used to measure your capabilities against other players.

AKA, add roll queue, pls.

Any other ideas? What is bad about roll queue?

Thanks.
you want roll q, this is gonna go under, JUST LIKE OW.

This is exactly what many people fail to understand. The system is not fair, and it never will be. You have no control over the matches, but you can read the match, predict the movements of your allies and opponents, and adjust to make things work in your favor.

The big problem is: You want to play a competitive game, in a role that suits you, with a character that you like (probably), and practice until you get good, and your Elo indicates your skill level. And if possible, have fun in the process. Wouldn't that be ideal?

But the reality is completely different, competitive games don't work like that. They throw you in an arena with 11 other random players, and the system simply says: "Do your best"

If you really want to win, you'll have to play with heroes that you don't like, in positions that you don't enjoy, in extremely stressful situations that aren't fun at all. You'll face toxic allies, trolls, leavers, feeders, etc.

This is the problem with playing ranked in competitive games. The experience is not the same as when we play a game for fun, and we select Iron Man just because we feel like playing him, or because we just watched one of his movies. Unfortunately, ranked games don't work that way, and this is the biggest dissonance I see in most players of any competitive game.

In short, if you want to play for fun, maybe ranked is not the best option. There will always be things beyond your control and frustration is guaranteed.

Unfortunately, this is how MMR works. Is it perfect? Not at all. Look at what happened to Overwatch, completely ruined by itself. Even adding Role Queue and becoming Free To Play was not enough.
Personally I think OW crashed because the devs had no idea what they were doing and so most of their alterations to the game just introduced more issues. The existence of widowmaker by itself is enough proof of that: Just boring to have in games. 1 tank per side was death also (who like constantly having to counterswap?) It was a terrible idea made by clueless people.
