Cap distracts the enemy team and harasses supports. If you're team does not utilize your pressure and capitalize on it then you are getting no value out of Cap. Not because of anything you did wrong, but because your team is garbage.
This makes Cap difficult to really place. Because he kind of sucks through no fault of his own at every rank. This may change in the future as players get better, but for now he's kind of like Rocket Raccoon's ult and beacon. If you're team cannot play off of the unique value you bring then you have to dumb it down for them. Big stuns, big heals, big damage. This is what the low IQ gamer understands.
That's why all of the "best" ults in the game are just giant AOE heals. People are very, very bad at this game. At all ranks. At all times. If you have a way to fix a giant mistake or force a giant mistake out of the enemy team that's the only thing you're brain dead Spiderman player is going to understand.
It's just a game... relax. It's not a factory and the boss isn't going to fire you.
Then you should direct this to the OP who is the one concerned about people being mad. Yanno, context matters. Try it sometime.
Blink once for safe and twice for unsafe. we are here for you. there is help.

There's some rapid blinking for you.
Play him to your hearts content, but do switch if the situation requires you to and if you think you'll get more value out of a different character in that match.
I main Jeff and get flack for that but in the end I perform better than those who doubt me and an unusual pick can often be a huge annoyance to the enemy team. Characters like Captain America are good at a thing that doesn't show in the game stats, they get the enemy healer attention meaning they have to deal with you instead of healing their team which might lead to players dying who normally feel safe (You get no contribution for these kills you enabled that way).
I get that a lot with Jeff "You deal too little healing". Completely ignoring I do something only Jeff can do, I sit in the enemy backline harassing everyone while assisting that way. If people try to chase me down and kill me, good. A healer fighting me does exactly 0 heals to their team, players are constantly distracted cuz there are an unkillable shark ready to pounce them. The mere fact that I divide enemy attention like that is value on its own and it doesn't show in the stats.
Captain America is similar like that, he plays differently from what most players expect of a tank but can contribute a lot of value if this is done properly.
In short, simply prove them wrong and win anyway. That's how a lot of off-meta players do it, it takes mental fortitude but generally be of the mindset that you know what you are doing and it will all be well.
More often than not the reason for losses is other players failing to adjust to your pick and I don't mean swapping to a different character but learning to synergize with you. Seen it a lot where people stand out in the open, it gets you a better view on the enemy but at the same time you give the enemy a nice juicy target to focus on and they expect a healer or Doctor Strange will cover for that.
