They serve 2 different purpose. One applying pressure, sustained damage the other is a massive burst. If you think this way you just play him wrong.
I feel like he's more of a team tank. His job is to assist whoever is in a scrap, not be the scrap itself. Fellow tank in the front needs some assistance? Leap to him to give damage reduction and knock up enemies. An ally in the back is getting dove? Leap to them instead and peel.
The Thing is a Vanguard, but he is not a front of the line Vanguard. His job is to assist whoever needs assistance, which is exactly what we need with the diver buffs this patch.
