What are the hitmarkers

Playing as Black Widow and I sniped Rocket in the face and he was like 3% health, shot him again and got a yellow hitmaker which did 0 damage to him, then i shot again and he died. is there like special protection going on or is it like armor pieces or something because the characters sometimes seem like they are healing when they arent even healers

I think those are for destructible environment hits. Also maybe for shields? I also think if you hit someone who's invincible (such as Hulk during a transformation), you have this metal on metal sound cue).

i dunno if they are also for environments because it wouldnt make sense to have 2 have the same color, maybe shields but lately its been constant and the characters dont have any shields to begin with so im a bit confused as to what is going on
