Be mindful of your comp. If you're the only vanguard (75% of the time you will be), you have to play carefully. Two tanks means you get to take more risks. Going too fast will get you in a lot more trouble than going to slow. Use voice comms. The tank is the quarterback and you're the only voice that should be heard 90% of the time.

Who specifically do you want to play? Emma and Mag are the two must learns, I'd say. Also spend enough time to get okay-ish on Strange if only so you can take advantage of last minute portal tech.
position yourself to make the job easy for your supp to heal without overextend, and dont tunnel vision on what YOU see on the screen as you are the one in front of the team you dont really know what is happening behind you

Literally nothing has changed since the dawn of war, lol. The vanguard is the army, the supports are home base, the healing flowing from the supports to the vanguards are the supply lines, and the DPS role is to attack the enemy supply lines while protecting their own.

Thanks for the tips! I'm currently practicing with Strange. I like Thor, but even though he does good damage, I'm very vulnerable, and I like to play with Peni to hold points or defend Convoy. I think I'll practice Mag then.

Yes, I try to keep an eye on the healers to defend them if I have a tank partner. I used to play Raccoon and I know how hard it is for healers sometimes when your DPS divers leave them alone and they are vulnerable to flanking attacks. Although when I go solo it is really difficult to push and guard. So I can't be effective doing both things, I don't know if another tank makes it easier.

Try learn/master Magneto 1st, his easier to play due to able to cast bubble on ally in range yet has a 1.5 sec of immune to all damage shield up, totally protect himself and ally at the same time

if You and your teammate have a good aim, the right click (Mag-Canon full charge) not only helps push enemy diver away, also possible a guarantee kill from targeting fire, since there is a minor knock back duration about 0.5-1sec
