If you're playing in these matches and doing decently well the game is probably like "okay, this is fine, this player clearly does belong in these matches" so you'll keep getting them.
I'm also getting the matches against GM and higher players, but I'm still frequently MVP in these matches (my overall MVP rate for the season is about 44%), so I guess I can't really complain that the matches are unfair.
my winrate is around 54% so i guess the game thinks i belong in these lobbies even though i clearly don't
Why does this work? Who knows. The paper doesn't really go into this kind of analysis, it just notes that the latter algorithm performs better. Maybe part of it is that having a high rank player in your game guarantees that you'll have at least a certain basic level of competence on your team, and if they have good voice comms they may be able to lead the team to playing better than they might otherwise. Perhaps this helps the lower rank players improve faster too, since they get the example of a good player to learn from. As for the good players, it lets them be the hero and get the experience of carrying the game, which is seemingly something that motivates players to get good at the game.
Now, it's possible that this system of giving each team some high rank players may inordinately screw over certain people. For example, if you're a Bronze Spiderman or Black Panther attempting to dive a GM backline, you're probably going to get trashed and get almost no value. If that is the case, just honestly go to comp to practice and play against other Bronze players, like don't worry about losing games in comp or something, it's just Bronze, you can always dig yourself out of any hole you might get into. Otherwise, I would probably just say to try to play characters who give pretty consistent value and can support the team well. For example, a character like Magneto is pretty straightforward to play, just walk up to the objective and use your shields, you may still die but at least you're getting value by creating space for your team. You could also easily play someone like Rocket and healbot, it may not be the best value in every case but it will always get at least some value.
No I dont buy this. Overwatch with way way less ppl playing at any given time dont have this problem.
This game is quickly becoming the mobile version of a hero shooter. All quantity and cashgrab and almost no quality.
