Also, remember that not only doing damage but also landing the killing blow matters, but the amount I'm not sure of. So a player with 50 kills that only did a small portion of the damage will probably come in behind a player with 30 kills, 30 killing blows, and 25 assists.
So... Players that pick something like Peni get a mixed bag of Kills, Heals and Damage Taken and often get MVP, whereas someone like Luna focusing more on Healing and some damage won't often get MVP. Moon Knight landing tons of assists and damage won't get MVP as often as Hela, because his damage spreads out a lot while she puts people down quickly, without sharing the damage. Etc.
So... Not random. But also not always going to give the actual MVP the MVP award. A tank without a good Healer is often dead, but a Peni will usually get MVP over the Healer that kept her alive the whole match.
