Usually it just means you're healing people. Rocket is so brain dead easy and efficient on top of having the best escape of all strategists in the game I stand behind the group and fire down the middle to heal everyone for free. Most people just don't have enough awareness to check their teammates hp unfortunately. Not something you'll have healers doing until like plat or diamond.

When i play dps i never ask for healings, i'll take from medikits

I will admit I have to sometimes let the dps in the backlines die, the 2 seconds it would take to 180, heal, then 180 back to the tank- The tank would die and we would lose the match.

If you want heals you will have to go on the point tbh, Im AoE healing anyone on there including myself and I cannot give up that for letting my team die to heal a Widow or whatver who should be fighting near a healthpack anyway.

Funnily enough I made this exact post because I had a Rocket who can't someone heal despite having the most brain dead way to heal people.
Yes, same rocket who somehow wasn't able to output heal inside contesting the dominion point. I don't know how that's possible but it happened

Healing numbers isn't what's important, what's important is how many times your teammates have died. In other words, how many people have you saved in a fight?

That said ping for heals it helps because healers are not perfect and don't always see the entire battlefield. If you are right behind them and need a heal just ask for it. The good ones will turn around and heal you.

And again -- high heals means your team is doing bad. It means your tank and mabye your DPS are feeding and always getting hit. Sometimes it's unavoidable when pushing but high heals are bad because it means the Supports have to be busy healing instead of killing. It means the enemy team is exerting pressure and yours probably isn't.

In Overwatch most of the time a team that is getting stomped has much higher heals than the winning team. You know why? Precisely the reason I mentioned.
