Server issue or to I need to tune my internet connection?

My internet is really reliable, like really just comfortably reliable and dependable for the dozens of online pvp games I've used it to play. Always runs smooth, rarely ever feel like I'm betrayed by ping. But for some reason, even though this game says I only have 18ms to the nearest server, IT FEELS LIKE i'M PLAYING ON 130ms SOMETIMES. It can be smooth and very responsive for a while and then suddenly I'm lag-spiked jittering around in the air or I'll just get shot way around a corner or I'll get pulled back around a corner.

I play some games where I can see my ping at all times like a fighter, and its 100% consistent for like 10 matches in a row, but at least once in every match of rivals I'll have some moment happen that really makes me question if I'm even playing on 18ms

I'm noticing a lot of bad lag lately too, even when I have decent green ping. I think they really need to add more servers. I've been loving the game, almost have all the achievements even, but I'm starting to feel like I should stop playing because the lag alone can easily lose you games.
