@BL:
Idk if you're being sarcastic / rhetorical so I'm just gonna layman's term it.
It's creating an alt account so your MMR / SR / ELO / etc is low and you can play against people who are likely new to the game and or worse than you. It's cringe and literally stealing enjoyment out of the game from the ppl you crush (a similar theft of enjoyment to hacking).
@Snow:
I think smurfing is generally a hard thing to detect, as with most shooters, there's a lot of skill transfer between games. In this case aim from other shooters and then game sense from other hero shooters. Like how a lot of OW2 streamers are hopping on and crushing it, despite those being their first accounts in the game. I don't disagree though, smurfing is terrible, and anyone finding leeway and excuses for intentional smurfing are just in denial about it. It's pretty akin to cheating / hacking / glitching imo; purposely causing the game's ELO systems to ignore you and exploiting your way into games the system was built to prevent you from.
Yeah, not fun. It isn't even fun if it's on your side. "Oh we won. Well, of course we won, our Hela plays like she should be in One Above All and got half the lobby's kills"
Yeah, no way around it I guess. In Overwatch even a price tag of $60 per game copy didn't stop people for making trash account for smurfing.
Maybe Devs could try to verify player's account with cell phone number or credit card to avoid multiple spoof accounts, but as long as getting game is free and you can have infinite number of Steam /Epic accounts, there is no way around it.
Good players make an alternative trash account, on which they play a bit to seem legit, then they throw down games to de-rank in competitive play.
Then they team up with other players, likely with whom they are friends with to boost them quickly through the ranks.
The other player plays on main account, and SMURF plays on trash account.
It is basically exploiting matchmaking system with retarded rule that allows players to make group (premades) between ranks. For example you can team up between 6 ranks in low bracket.
Bronze III, II, I and Silver III, II, I.
For example, the SMURF can be ranked as Gold II on main account. On trash account he keeps his rank around Bronze II (intentionally losing matches). Then he teams up with other player, lets say Silver II and boost him to Gold quickly. The premades can have more players than one. xD
The matchmaking is sort of averaging skill rating score for a group, so lets say Bronze II + Silver II = Bronze I <- that's basically the exploit here.
That group is then put against a team that is averaging Bronze I, and then SMURF suddenly plays very well. And you wonder why are you being stomped in Bronze I rank.
Freaking Overwatch 1 all over again.
Marvel Rivals is so similar to Overwatch 1 that it inheritances most of its flaws as well.
But to just lvl it to pwn it off, for $$ is wrong, and can be abused ofc :(
