How are you supposed to practice?
I want to learn vanguard, but quick play is 6 DPS, rarely a vanguard, even more rare a healer. It's basically team DM with none of the strategy an actual team would use in comp play. So how am I supposed to learn to tank without joining comp and getting a bunch of losses?

Thanks

There's a part where you can play around with each character. The characters seem simple enough that learning them isn't too difficult to figure out from there, at least enough to get started with said character. Has a few galactic robots to attack, and you can spawn heroes to see how much damage your attacks will do against them. The hud is good enough to tell you most of what each ability does and you can pretty much freely use them in this mode.
Either go to Practice Range or if you want to play an actual match you can try the Custom Game mode. Add 11 bots with whatever difficulty you want them to be to learn whatever character you want to try.

Sadly, if you try to learn a character in QP, you'll just get a bunch of people screaming at you that you suck, demanding you swap off and reporting you for throwing.

This, literally got screamed at all game for playing Storm by a Star-Lord, even though I ended up with more frags and damage than him somehow????

The game is very quickly becoming just as toxic as OW, just gotta tune people out and play your best.

Vanguard is a more difficult role to play. You have allot of things you need to be doing for your team, which is why allot of people don't like the role. If you have never played this genre of game before a few vanguard tips from my years tanking in overwatch.

1) Your goal is to make space for your team. "Space" means just that, you provide a threat to a zone or area that makes the enemy team want to avoid it. When you make space for your team you are going to give the duelists openings to score kills and a safer place for your strats to provide utility and heals. Sometimes making space is simply just making part of the enemy team turn around. Cap makes space with a quick dive at the backline to force the strats to heal each other. Your duelists can now take a 1v1 and not worry about his target getting heals for a few moments.

2) Use your defensive cool downs for yourself. Don't try and shield your team mates ALL THE TIME as Dr Strange. Your defensive are there to get YOU out of trouble and last longer so you can do your job of making space.

3) Don't just spam attacks into the other vanguard. In fact, you generally want to ignore the vanguard if possible and attack strats then supports. This goes for everybody of course but allot of people think they need to go toe to toe with the other vanguard. If he is the only you can safely attack then by all means attack them, of course.

4) Don't be afraid to back out of a fight for a health pack. Health packs are you friend. Don't stick around to die if you can put yourself out of the fight for a few seconds to get a big chunk of health restored.

There are more tips of course. You can try searching for overwatch tank tips, allot of it translates over to rivals.
