"MULTIVERSUS IS SO PEAK, SMASH KILLER, BEST GAME OF ALL TIME"
>500 players
"XDEFIANT IS THE COD KILLER WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR, SO PEAK"
>Shutting down soon
Both of those games are fantastic experiences I absolutely agree on them being better than their competition.
But that's just the thing, there's no ROOM for competition in this market unfortunately. The Switch 2 just got announced, the second Smash gets released for it MultiVersus is DONE (again)
XDefiant, like I said is already shutting down. The devs just pumped all their last bit of content into it and it's absolutely OUTSTANDING, it even has a gorgeous Rayman Map, like what shooter game gets a RAYMAN MAP..?! it's so good, but they already made it so new accounts cannot be created anymore, it's just done :/
And the next big one to die WILL be Marvel Rivals. I have well over 100 hours on it, I love playing it, it's really fun. But it's just not gonna last unless the devs just REALLY knock it out of the park, but judging by the companies previous work, and their track record.. it really doesn't look too bright for Marvel Rivals..
Overwatch was only ever balanaced for high level and E Sports so us normal players got left behind. Look where that got them? A failed e sport and people leaving the moment as something else came up.
Oh no one cares if its killing Overwatch, it can't becuase its already dead.
A game with a strong competitive scene will last, and ones that don't have that will die out.
Look at Fortnite, people genuinely think that "Zero Build saved the game" but the ONLY time Zero Build had a higher playercount is when it was forced to be the only mode lol
Zero Build's "Ranked" mode gets under 10k VERY OFTEN, my Ranked games over there take like 15 minutes to load and when it finally does, it's like 70 players instead of 100 and all of the names are the ones from the previous game.
If there wasn't big tournaments and a huge playerbase in the regular BR side, the game would be on a big decline.
But them balancing stuff in mind for higher level play, like when they toned down all the OP Marvel stuff during that Marvel Season recently, doesn't do anything bad to casual players. Because their lobbies are filled with ai anyway, but if it was a full 3 month Season with nothing but OP garbage, the playercount would be noticeably lower. Casuals wouldn't quit because of stuff getting nerfed cause they just play for fun anyway. But pros WOULD quit cause of bad balance because their enjoyment comes with the game being in a good state
So to tie back to comparing Overwatch to Marvel, Overwatch is a balanced game, Marvel Rivals is not.
One will last, the other will shut down.
We can wait and see which one it is.
(Spoiler Alert: The shutdown one starts with an M)
I don't know what communities you're a part of but I'll tell you right now, no one was saying this about either of those games. Within the FGC multiversus was considered an interesting twist on smash's formula. A platform fighter that focuses on 2v2 combat is a novel idea, but no one was pretending that it was ever going to dethrone smash.
I'm not as familiar with FPS communities as I am the FGC, but the impression I got was that xdefiant had some hype before launch but it was hit with delay after delay after delay, to the point where when it did finally drop they were striking was the iron was frozen cold. Even then, most of the reception, as far as I saw, was that it was a fun game, but it was mostly just fine.
I'm sure both of those games had their evangelizers but they were absolutely not the majority of either community. Neither of those games had the reception or sustained hype that marvel rivals got.
I'm not saying marvel rivals is going to destroy overwatch or anything, I can't see the future and like with a lot of games that have institutional inertia, it's likely that the only thing that's going to kill overwatch is itself, but what I'm saying is that if you're going to criticize communities for saying a thing, make sure they were actually saying that thing.
Focus on your Marvel Rivals match, if you tab out too much the game might crash
No, but Overwatch *was* bad for lower tier players. The balance was so screwed up in favor of whoever the devs wanted to push at the moment you couldn't play half the roster in mid-rank quick play. Characters would go from bad to wildly OP to bad again in three months. The devs ruined the characters I liked, one after another, until I couldn't play virtually any heroes I liked. And I played most of the roster - it's just that if the devs wanted you to play someone, they'd make them a god and make eveyone else trash and MAKE you do it.
OW spit on their audience and threw them away. There's room for a new leader.
