He is perfectly fine without lock on to target.
If you really want to focus on certain skills, then simply make a separate control scheme just for Venom and distribute his abilities between the keyboard and mouse, or configure the controller as you prefer.
(You can create a separate control scheme for each hero.)
That's exactly what I did and now playing Venom is much easier.
Also Venom can headshot now and wouldn't be able to with an auto lock.
It is very frustrating when you try to hit enemies and you miss.
Why is it a thing in the game at all!
They nailed scarlet and cloak&dagger so well, why did they ruin others with.. how those are called.. skillshots or smth. Such a crappy game design!
Though I do wish Venom is a melee unit instead of tickling the target with your tendrils
