PSA to those who are crashing (GPU dump, unhandled exception, etc)
Typed this up as a response in another thread here but it got big enough that I thought I might as well make one myself.

There's a thread in the Discord with a few thousand responses, but the short of it is that none of us can find a fix. If you can think of it, it's probably been tried.

Personally, I have:

  • Reinstalled the game multiple times, once using files from the Epic launcher.
  • Wiped extra folders after uninstalling. (Some left over in directory + appdata.
  • Verified files multiple times.
  • Tried 4 older driver releases then cleanly reinstalled the latest ones with DDU.
  • Cleared shader cache, which can stop crashing but only until it fills up again.
  • Checked for CPU instability as I'm using a 14700k. (No issues, stress tested twice)
  • Checked for overheating (Nope) and repasted my CPU to be safe. (No issues)
  • Checked for RAM instability. (No issues)
  • Tried every mix of in-game settings, with frame caps at 30/60/90 and 144.
  • Tried multiple different power settings.
  • Tried running the game as admin/in compatibility mode for Windows 8.
  • Tried making exceptions in my firewall for the game and launcher.
  • Tried turning off all overlays and recording software/closing browser and Discord.
  • Made sure my BIOS/chipset drivers are up-to-date.
  • Messed around with different settings in Nvidia Control Panel.
GPU: 3080 ti
CPU: I7 14700k
RAM: 64GB 6000MHz DDR5

Game is installed on an SSD with plenty of free space.

Most frequent errors are a "GPU" crash that I've noticed only triggers when the game's memory leak reaches critical mass, which seems to be about 50/64GB of my RAM, an "unhandled exception" crash which triggers when the game can't access certain .pak files correctly, and another generic UE5 crash that I can't remember.

This is happening to a bunch of us with varying specs, doesn't matter if you're using AMD/Nvidia GPUs or AMD/Intel CPUs, doesn't matter how much RAM you have.

A few people have reported that disabling XMP or slightly underclocking (6000MHz > 5600MHz) their RAM has fixed it for them, but this game's memory management in general is atrocious. I'll probably underclock my RAM to test it out eventually but I'm pretty fed up at this point, and even if that was a surefire fix, it's still an issue with UE5 being a trash engine and not people's systems.

If anyone has a hunch about the common denominator or you've found a "fix" that works for you, drop it below so other people can give it a crack. Just know that if you're unlucky like me and many others, you could be troubleshooting for hours with no results.

Have you updated your bios with the intel microcode, 13/14gen have a catastrophic issues

Only issues i had was random crashes during inputs.

My easy fix was just changing DLSS from Quality to Performance. No more crashing.

But that's just me, feel free to see if it works for you, good luck guys.

FPS Drops to 1

Im experiencing mass fps drops that lasts for 20 to 40 seconds. Every now and then but in the first game always happens. Tried a bunch of stuff listed here, pretty much everything that im able to, nothing solves.
Also, changing in-game graphics settings doesnt change a thing, just makes the game slightly uglier.

Besides that the game runs smoothly on High.

I dont know if anyone is running on 2560x1080, but most people complaining is not.

My config:
4070 super, 12gb vram
r5 3600
16gb ram
game running on a m2 nvme

If you're using DLSS, trying switching to TAAU with render res of like 70. Or vice versa if you are already using TAAU.

Turn V-sync off in game (but turn on in nvidia control panel) and leave reflex on.

Set global illumination to off or low. Just don't use lumin. Screen space reflections off. Set shadows to low. Set post processing to low. Set effects to low. Models and textures can be high or ultra.

If none of that works, try downloading the program i mentioned above. It's called intelligent standby list cleaner. It's free and it's super lightweight. See If that helps and report back.

Your CPU is a bottleneck. And being that this game is apparently a ram hog, 16gb probably isn't helping you either.

Yeah, I mentioned in a previous reply that 13th/14th gen instability was my first suspicion but I've updated my BIOS, underclocked my CPU and I've also ran a few stress tests on it that all come up clean. The game is also unstable in the same ways for people with AMD hardware, it isn't hardware specific and after digging through multiple crash logs with WinDbg I'm gonna guess it's a code typo/mistake somewhere in the memory management, as the "unhandled exception" crash logs usually point to an invalid value somewhere tagged as a "%"/percentage when it shouldn't be. Just a guess though, I only know a little bit of Python.

There's also another similar access violation that points to not having access to certain .pak files, but I've experimented with permissions a bunch with no luck.

The only puzzling thing is that the crashing only seems to affect a porportionately small amount of the overall playerbase, so if it was an innate code error I'd assume everyone would have the same problems.

We've basically narrowed down the culprit to be memory, but we can rule hardware out there too as I've seen the same errors from people running all RAM sizes and clock speeds. Doesn't matter if you have 16GB 3600MHz DDR4, or 64GB 6000Mhz DDR5 like me, for people who have this issue the memory will leak and fill up before you get one of the UE5 crashes or your system shuts down. Some people say disabling XMP or slightly underclocking their RAM fixed it for them, but I've also seen that reported both by people with 3600Mhz and by people with 6000Mhz, so it's not so much an issue with the speed itself but with the RAM running at full speed regardless of what the top speed "limit" is. For others this does nothing, so I honestly have no idea.

It's probably some weird background software that's the common denominator for all of us that just doesn't play well with the game's calls for file access/memory management somehow.

Edit: I also thought it could be Windows, but it doesn't seem to matter if you're on Win 10/11 or which update you have either.

This is the ONLY game my rig cannot run. It's not an issue with my hardware, it's an issue with this software. And as OP said, I have followed every single piece of advice to address the issue and the game constantly crashes to desktop. And I mean everything from verifying my BIOS is updated, under-tuning my CPU according to the advice of the devs, verifying the files, running it on low (lol on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 4090), reinstalling it, updating my drivers, disabling DLSS and every other graphical option advised, etc.

4090
i7 13700K
32GB DDR5
6TB M.2

I can run Cyberpunk, Control, RDR2, Flight Simulator, you name it, but Marvel Rivals will not run.

Yeah the issue isn't how graphically intensive the game is, but how stable the engine is. UE5 is notoriously unstable and there's some game-specific issues with Rivals too given other UE5 games run fine for me and others.

At this point I'm just waiting for a patch, but it's pretty disappointing that we haven't gotten a hotfix since release. Either it isn't a priority fix (Which is pretty sad) or they're waiting to patch it in the mid-season, which is also annoying but when a game is released on consoles as well as PC and you want to update all versions at the same time (Which you have to because of crossplay in this case) you have to wait for the console patches to be approved by their parent companies, which can delay an update that would've been out for PC users weeks ago had they not have to check, if you get me. That said, this seems to be a PC-specific problem so pushing a fix back - implying they even have one yet - still doesn't make much sense.

Edit: I also thought it could be Windows, but it doesn't seem to matter if you're on Win 10/11 or which update you have either.

Due to the oddity of how many people it affects and the wild variation of set ups that are affected, I would say it's a game memory leak issue that's either exacerbated or delayed based on combinations of what hardware user is running along with whatever other processes are active at the same time.

In short, Rivals is trying to grab every address it can until it can't anymore. So either you crash because you ran out of true available memory or you crash because the game sees "available" memory which is actually being used by something else.

Really all I can think of as I don't particularly have much running in the background of my PC during gaming. Just Steam, Discord, MSI Afterburner, and MB. Probably explains why I can generally get to double digit matches in a singular session before crashing.

Otherwise I'm running the game at high settings, 1080p, capped 120 FPS no problem on my rig:

3080 (undervolted)
Ryzen 7 7700x (undervolted)
32GB DDR5

Is anyone getting the issue in which the game seems to crash causing the monitor to black because I assume its connection to the gpu is interrupted? I can tell its not a full PC crash because I can continue to communicate with my friends while on discord. The gpu still seems to also be running because the fans are still going on. It forces me to hard reset the computer by holding the power button down. The crashes are consistent, but the time it takes to crash the game is inconsistent.

I figured maybe the gpu was resetting or something because I read through one of the discussions that windows intervenes and forces the gpu to reset. I waited about 10 minutes for the screen to come back up, but nothing.

Ive tried dozens of fixes to no avail. Reinstalled/updated drivers. Tried older versions. Tried specific settings on the launcher. Tried installing it through Epic. Tried cleaning the pc out and reseating the GPU and reapplying new thermal paste on the cpu. Last test I haven't tried is trying my GPU on another computer. I can run games like Spacemarine 2, Cyberpunk, Destiny 2, and Tekken 8 with no real issues. Its so weird because it was completely fine during the launch, but something happened after the winter update or something.

Specs
3080 10gb vram
11th gen intel i7-11700kf 3.6ghz
32 GB Ram
game is installed on an SSD

At this point, Im more so interested in what the actual reason is causing these problems for me and so many others. I just want to be able to look through the discussions and confidently say, "Yup, its the game and not my PC or its parts".

There's a few threads in the Discord (#community help) there's also a diagnostic tool in the game's directory that packs a zip file with your crash logs so you can send them to support, they process those through Discord too but I'm pretty sure I'm only getting bot responses and they just tell me to do stuff I've already tried. Regardless, it's good to send your logs.

I had this issue starting a day or so ago with the almost the same specs as you. I was able to fix the issue by installing Intels ETU(Extreme Tuning Utility) tool and taking moving the "performace core ratio" number down to 53 (original number was 57) and this completely fixed my game.

Yeah I tried this, as well as a slight underclock in BIOS and it did nothing for me. Glad you got it working, though.
