Can someone explain "slowdown" to me?
I got this mechanic, and I just don't understand how and when to use it and what does it give me...

It will help you most of the time - the extra ascension given by each slowdown more than makes up for the loss of lap speed. There are a few times where it will live up to its name and actually slow you down, but those are quite noticeable (you'll see score/IP/EP gather a lot slower than usual.)

But how does it work and when do I use it?

It slows your lap speed in exchange for ascension bonus. It's not very useful when you first unlock it but becomes useful when you have Eternity Challenge Milestone #2 (prestige resets nothing) and Animal Milestone #4 (promotions reset nothing).

Before then, it tends to slow you down too much and you really have to watch it. When you do get those milestones, setting automation to 10 seems to work just fine and can really give you a boost.

You can only use it when all color circles are full.

How does it work? It slows down your lap speed, in exchange for one extra ascension.

When to use it? Basically all the time, unless you notice it is slowing you down - easier to check with automated slowdown later in progression, which IIRC is before the first time it could harm your progression. I only remember it being bad for one of the Eternity Challenges, but after those were done, I haven't turned it off. Currently have 114 supernovas, e2500+ EP and 3 billion Eternities and slowdown only helps.

I'm kind of in a similar boat here.

I got the slowdown and want to get its corresponding achievement, but I don't know how to activate it.

There's a slowdown..."button" underneath the revolution buyers, but I click it and nothing happens.

You'll just need to keep advancing a bit. When you get fast enough, you can slow down, but it isn't extremely clear when that is... The button just appears there when it is possible.

It seems to occur when all your circles "solidify." And yeah, it does seem like this is mostly useful in the much later portions of the game where it's almost always solid (also when your ascension power is substantially stronger).

You can perform a slowdown only when all your lap speeds are above 10 laps/s, which is typically when the circles are solid. It then divides those speeds by 10 and gives you an extra ascension level, which in turn increases your ascension power.

At the earlier stages of the game you might have to play around with going up and down levels as you can eek out a bit more score by jumping between 0 slowdowns and your max.

If your ascension power is more than 10 (there are places where this is not the case) I'm pretty sure slowdown will always be worth activating.

question then. Currently sitting at 10 Eternities, and trying to brute force EC1 level 2. Actively managed i can Eternate every ~40 mins in normal runs. Am I wasting my time trying to do the challenge, or do you think its worth sticking it out?

Eternity Challenges (and most of the game from that point on) are a matter of having the right amount of things. If you're taking too long to complete a challenge, you either have a bad lab setup, or not enough supernovas, or not enough APs, or not enough eternities.

Figuring all that out was the difference between EC 10-5 taking weeks and finishing it in less than two hour, at least for me.

Exactly, if the challenge will take you more than an hour, its imo not worth it. Instead spend that time to farm for eternities+ap(possible supernovas), and you wont have to spend time "Bruce forcing" any of them, the start of the game to dilation takes a bit over a week, so you just need to do whats the most efficient thing for progress in the moment
