I dont understand how the animals work. Are they supposed to be extremely hard to unlock or am i doing something wrong. i get an eternity every 3 minutes yet if i wanted to get an animal it whould take hours of playing yet there are 81 animals all going up in price the further you get. Any tips???

It's somewhat the same with Infinity Points.
First few upgrades were 1, 2, 4... then what, 1e33 at the end?
But you unlock something that lets you quickly gain a lot of Infinity Points to reach that, and now you're doing Eternities in minutes, not days.
So, soon enough, you should unlock the stuff that lets you gain a lot more Eternity Points.

Don't look at eternities, but eternity points. You need to do longer Eternity runs to get more Eternity points per second, just like it works with Infinities and Infinity points.

Slow at the start, gets easier when you can break eternity (allows you to buy more with score and IP). Also when you unlock the lab with 7 animals you can get much better EP gains. Slow start, but after about halfway through starts progressing faster.

wait can i get multiple EP´s in one run?? how do i do that when my IP is maxxed at 1.8e308

you need to break the eternity and then doing long runs to be achiving milestone and buying more animals. Check some discussions about laboratory when you unlock it. It will give you a huge boost in point scoring and so unluckoing new animals

Oh ok i will try to unlock the break eternity milestone and see how it will go. I totally forgot it existed so thanks for reminding me.

Do you have 1 million Eternities? Recommend leaving it on at 17ms eternity overnight. After that you'll need to switch between builds to push Lab etc. There's a full guide on the Discord. Oh, if you haven't broken Eternity yet you're not at a point where you should worry about animals.
