Passive items: explained !
Hello!
The goal of this post is to make a lot of the passive items clear in their use, and also their *hidden* uses. Be aware that I'm only talking about items I could encounter and that I am pretty sure of the use, so nothing is a 100% guarantee.

Flashlight : It removes a random threat at the start of a night event and allows to light up caves during wilderness exploration, allowing to get some blocked items.

Knife / Butterfly Knife (golden/vanilla) : Doesn't seem to have any use during events, but helps cut vines blocking the way during wilderness exploration, and helps shrug off muggers in city exploration.
The Butterfly Knife is an upgrade to the knife as it has the same function but takes only a single space.

Rope : Removes a random threat when facing an "animal" event (such as deer, goats, etc...), and helps to climb up boulders during wilderness exploration.

Crowbar: Removes all threats during "Something on the road/roadside" and "Abandonned Car/Hut" events, and helps open up fenced zones in city exploration.

Tent: Gives 3 extra energy when sleeping in a car. If you have the "rain lover" trait from an introspection, restores energy fully and gives an "inspired" buff.

Sleeping bag: Makes you immune to the "cold" debuff when sleeping in a car.

Thermos: Keeps warm items, such as coffees and teas warm, preserving the effect.

Jack: Allows to change the tires of your vehicle anywhere, useful if you're using the Sports, Rimmed, Winter and Rally Tires/Wheels.

Portable stove : Allow to eat some otherwise un-eatable items, such as potatoes or instant ramen.

Dog food : Can fend off the dogs encountered during city exploration, as can do the punk's dog.

Gun: Can be bought at a shady dealer in cities, available during the night, and offered by the convict when completing his quests. Can shoot open gates in city exploration, and gives access to the "Jail" ending if blacking out during a "pulled over by cop" event.

The knife also helps getting past group of thugs when exploring cities.

One item not on your list is the thermos. It keeps unlimited amount of coffee cups hot forever, at the cost of inventory space for the thermos itself. Coffees are still 1 slot each.

Debatable, the jack could be seen as a passive item too I suppose? As in you never use it directly, but you can switch wheels.

Personal experience:
- I never ran into a situation where a butterfly knife did not work where a regular knife would have. It seems to be strictly an upgrade, as it saves 1 inventory slot.
- Dog food works as you think, the dog won't block you anymore.
- The shady dealer won't buy drugs from you. Unless it was patched in the last few days, there's no way to get rid of illegal drugs except by discarding them. Nobody will buy them.

Gun can be used to shoot open the locked gate in city, Punks Dog can befriend the city dog. You get gun if you help Convict escape.

Thank you for the clarification for these items. I added the correct explanations for them in my post.
The gun is also usefull in another case

If you travell with the gambler and he gets up to level 3 Loansharks will attack you when leaving a town

The gun finishes those encounters instantly

Adding to this, the gun also instantly finishes the mugger encounter when you sleep outside in the City.

Oh, forgot to add, Cool Shades came in to help during the Forest Shadows event by removing most of the threats.
