Very lame. They should warn you at least. I spent a lot of resources just to go exploring :/
First, choose a wall. On your left, or on your right. Then just follow that wall. this will almost always take you by all 5 items and back to the start.
Second, you can eat food from your glovebox while exploring. Stick some chocolate in there and you should have plenty of energy.
It's not the fact that you don't keep the items when your energy runs out, it's the fact that they're now gone forever. You should either be able to go where you ran out of energy to pick them up, or the spots you looted should be lootable again.

Yeah I almost uninstalled the game right after honestly, it was that much of a bummer. Not so much at being angry but just not trusting the game to not randomly screw me over fin the future. It's alot of investment for wonky stuff like that to happen
will do if I ever give this game another chance :D
Not recommended in the city exploration areas which contain muggers and angry dogs.
