Grinding in single player is very long, in multiplayer you fight the last boss on hard mode over and over again (something like 20mil xp per kill) to reach level 75 and even that takes some time. No respawning enemies in single player gives any xp like that.
You usually complete the game around level 25ish although the level cap is much higher but in SP you will never realistically reach the cap. You don't have to be a super high level to beat the game.
MP is seperate from SP but given the way MP works you can max out your character fairly fast. Also, yes, you do need to use a 3rd party software to actually play MP with other people. Myself and others use Evolve, there is a thread on here somewhere with all the details.
