Unsolvable cutscene fast-forward/skip bug
When I begin a new game the intro cutscene loads and then immediately skips. It's so fast you can't see it, but further investigation reveals it's actually playing at mach speed.

There are many other posts relating to this bug, and I have tried the solutions in all of them. Nothing has worked for me.

  • D3DOverrider — Won't launch for me on Windows 10
  • Timeslip's resolution patch — Works but doesn't fix the cutscene bug for me
  • dgVoodoo2 — Works but doesn't fix the bug in either DirectX or Glide modes
  • Forcing VSync, Triple Buffering, or setting a Max Framerare in the Nvidia control panel — Doesn't appear to work. If it did, it might fix the bug?
  • Limiting CPU speed — Even capped at 0.78ghz with affinity set to a single core, the cutscene plays too fast and the bug persists. The game was lagging pretty majorly with this setting, and while the cutscene played slightly slower, it wasn't slow enough to fix the bug.

After the cutscenes skip, the character's walk animation doesn't play and they just float around. This can be fixed by saving and loading, and while the game is playable, it's significantly less interesting without the cutscenes.

If anybody from the future or Google finds this thread, please let me know if you find a solution. Summoner is one of my favorite games from my youth, and I would love to play it again.

Just curious if it has also vanished for other people due to some update either on steam or with the game.

I don't know if the bug will reappear if I play the game again however one thing I have changed recently that has been causing another game (ARK survival evolved) to completely freeze and crash on me is disabling Hardware acceleration on Discord and my Internet Browser.

Considering this was the cause of issues with ARK I am curious if this was also the thing causing Summer's cutscenes to skip like that.

Might be worth a shot disabling that if you are still having this problem.
Hopefully it will fix it for you.

Do you have VSync enabled in the game options?

The game runs perfectly fine for me, so im not sure what's causing this problem for you.
Being that this is a reasonably old game now though my best guess would be capping the framerate to 30 or 60 might solve it, but I can't say for sure nor do I know how to do that.

I did try enabling Vsync in-game and capping the framerate, but no luck. Seems to just be a random bug which affects some but not others unfortunately. :sad_creep:

That's unfortunate, I have no other ideas outside of maybe try doing a full wipe and uninstall of the game and reinstalling it.. can't promise that will help though.

Posting your PC specs may also help someone else identify if it's a hardware incompatibility or something, I'm not very proficient in that stuff myself.

Hopefully you'll get this issue fixed, Summoner is one of my favourite RPG's as well so I can definitely sympathise with your situation.
Good luck to you.

Well crap, looks like i've managed to get this bug myself now.

Game was running fine until I got to the boss in the sewers, the cutscene loaded up and crashed the game (cutscene still played in the background, at least I heard the music and effects of it but couldn't watch the scene play out.. was just a black screen)

After reloading the game it now skips over every cutscene and locks up the character animations afterwards so they glide around in funny poses.
Bummer, was enjoying playing this again.

Reinstalling the game didn't work either nor does starting a fresh game.
The opening cutscene that worked fine for me days ago also skips now.
What an annoying bug, totally ruins the whole game.

Seriously. Sorry to hear you've got it too. Maybe one day when I upgrade to Windows 11 I'll try to play again. This game was a major part of my teenage years, and I'm overdue for another playthrough :(

Aye same, love the game.
Was running fine too till I got to that sewer boss cutscene, something just broke there and now the whole game is bugged >.<
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Also working for me now too, weirdly, since buying an ultrawide monitor. Honestly nothing else has changed, but the game cinematics and speed now play normally.

For me it started at the Khosani boss fight (giant fire salamanka) At the start of the cutscene it glitched and since then it skips all cutscenes. A shame, I really enjoyed the game.

So I had this issue when I tried playing on windows 10. I’ve just upgraded to windows 11 and the cutscenes have started working again!

I just bought this game and I had the cutscene skip problem from start when running the game through steam and I run Win 11. Took some time before I realized I had missed the story cutscenes xD

I managed to solve it by starting the game through running the Sum.exe file in compatibility mode for Win XP and also with admin priviledges. Its in the local files steamapps\common\Summoner
So far it has been working great, Im in the sewers.
