And in that regard, pressing "ESCAPE" simply made sense to use it to actually escape the game (like the button isn't named like that just for fun). It's only a modern change, that it was reinvented into being an menu-button
Back in the day we had not many options, but he what i always did/do on Z was save the game every mission and then u dont lose any progress.
Or just playing through the whole game in an evening^^ Games back then weren't really long anyway.
