That being said, I completely disagree with your proposal regarding 'being able to see the entire city'. The point of the game is to use tactics/strategy to defeat the Goblin Boss and Dragon with what you scrounge together.
Typically I'd suggest
Wheat on 25% Bonus Patch. 25% upgrade, 15% chance for gold. It can get you plenty of gold overtime and you no longer need(but you'll want to keep just in case) the market.
Magic School on 25% Bonus Patch, another 25% thanks to the upgrade
Sawmill in between if possible or underneath the magic school(for the 10% production bonus to connected buildings). The combination of the 10% and 50% for the magic school means you're getting a spell almost every 2ish waves, 3 depending on swapping.
Your choices of either Militia or Peasant Hovels. Oh, also if you've got the excess water, the research bench for producing new building card choices. I've not had much luck with it but every time you get one from it you can recycle them for a neat 5 more Denair(spelling?).
On the sides you can have excess resource production for when you don't need to recruit troops and want to maintain a stockpile. Usually keep a market or spare Well in reserve just in case you need to produce the 25 water productions in a pinch.
To be honest ever since the newest update I've not had a single run where I've managed to kill the Dragon so far. The nerfs to Militia and Peasant production speed just don't allow the ability to send wave after wave of your own men at the dragon until a mountain of corpses has been reached and your walls are shiny pristine thanks to the Bloodbound Brick Artifact(1 HP regain per own unit killed)
