Almost bought the game, but then I saw it still opens the Ubisoft Launcher every time.
So, no thanks. I use a dedicated controller-only Steam PC in the lounge room, so if I can't launch the game with two button presses, then you're done

Other Steam games like Cyberpunk 2077 can be flagged to skip their launcher, there's no reason why Ubisoft can't.

Oof, this a huge stumble from Ubi, their launcher login is so onerus and completely breaks game console, Big Picture installs

This is why I do not purchase Ubisoft games anymore. I really don't understand why they limit the use case like this. Do they do the same thing on consoles, too? It just seems so silly. I used to be a huge Ubisoft fan. It is extremely disappointing.

Same boat here, wants the game, but not on switch and i will not use ubistore

Same, I would buy this game in a heartbeat, but having to use Ubisoft Connect makes it a dealbreaker.

It's infected with denuvo too. Don't support ubisoft. Emulate the switch version.

Ubisoft Montpellier just closed. Another bites the wokie's dust!

I don't really get why it is required, This game is 100% Singleplayer.
The Dev's even put up a Guide on how to get it working on Steam Deck, Wanna know what could make it Steam Deck Verified and work out of the box? Not making it require the Launcher.

At that point, I'd just play Metroid Dread first. But yeah, Ubi launcher sucks.

Same boat as OP. I was going to buy this game at the next sale, but not dealing with the garbage Ubi launcher which is only a small step above malware. Not sure why DRM is required on this game, either. Never seen a company deliberately make it so off-putting for me to want to play its games.

Can anyone recommend a good, recent Metroidvania game like this one in its place that isn't infested with garbage or priced at 2x what it should probably cost?

The last couple I finished:

Minishoot Adventures:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1634860/Minishoot_Adventures/
A unique genre-bending mix of top-down Zelda, metroidvania and twin-stick shooters. Loved this game. Don't let the lame name put you off XD

The Messenger:

It's an older game now, but I only discovered it recently. The 8-bit look is overused these days, but the gameplay and sharp controls is fantastic.
