Depth Lore Discussion
Something that has intriuged me for a long time is this game's lore. For the most part, this is what we can take from it:

1. Depth takes place, on all official maps, around Cuba- primarily southern Cuba, it seems, based on Breach (which seems to take place somewhere in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef), Olmec, Antiguo, etc. However, it also seems likely, based on Galleon, that at least part of the game takes place in Eastern Cuba, perhaps as far away as Puerto Rico or Martinique. However, with this information we can assume that Depth PROBABLY only takes place in the Caribbean Sea and not the Gulf of Mexico or north of Cuba. This is further supported by the original three divers being Hispanic.

2. Depth takes place After the year 2000 at the earliest. We can know this because the ADS was developed in 2000. However, it is also likely (though not confirmed) to take place after 2013, because the ADS was not officially used until this, with the APS still being in service at the time. Given the fact the divers are pirates, it's not impossible for them to obtain the ADS prior to 2013, but it's unlikely.

3. The maps are restricted areas. Our most important piece of evidence for this is that the maps are infested with seals- almost certainly Caribbean Monk Seals, which are supposed to be extinct. It would not make much sense for there to be an extinct seal swimming around these maps in such large numbers and the species to not be considered extinct without them being areas off-limits to humans. In addition to this, several of the maps have literal fences surrounding part of them, most notably Crude and Devil's Head, and the fact there is thousands of dollars worth of gold just lying around the maps further supports this. Most of these are likely because they are archaeological sites (Olmec, Temple, Antiguo, Galleon) or just dangerous locations because of risk of drowning, falling debris, and of course, sharks (Station, Devil's Head, Cove, Breach, That one map that elludes me with the cargo ship). The only map not explained by either of these is Hillside- which can be dismissed as it was promotion for Chivalry and may not actually fit into the game's lore.

any additions or critiques or other discussion of the lore is welcome here. :)

Fiction dude. Fiction. Could be another friggin' planet. Could be the year 3072. Could be seals that migrated following global warming and ice caps melting.... Fiction.

Though I hear Jin the Hammerhead is real, and does reside in Cuba. So you are onto something.

This is my own theory. Since all of the new weird skins coming out from the royal thresher to the dunkleosteus, most of these weird sharks and prehistoric fish can be somehow coming from different dimensions and/or alternate realities. Here's some proof. Dunkleosteus appears relatively unchanged since the Devonian period and the fact that since dunkleosteus is an apex predator, sharks should of stayed small. And since dna cannot survive millions of years in fossils, the only logical explanation is that portals of some kind opened up and connected eachother leading to a passage between the oceans of other realities/dimensions with our own. But that's just my guess lol.

so you are saying that Star Trek has no lore to look into? and we should just ignore it completely?

Exactly. Even if the lore isn't entirely accurate, I find it fun to share theories and dig into what we can learn from the game. :)
