Logitech c920 is the current gold-standard for USB devices. $60-70 on Amazon, and it's worth every penny.

Playstation 3 Eye camera, if you have one laying around- CL drivers are $1.99.

This is what I use, and it works great. Also quite cheap compared to a lot of other cameras that meet the specifications for FaceRig.

Regardless, you just need to keep in mind that you want these specs at minimum:
60 frames per second, 640x480 resolution.
The higher the better, but keep that as your base minimum requirements.

Would a built-in laptop camera or a PS2 Eyetoy camera work with it then, or do they have too low resolution/FPS?

Built in ones are a mixed bag.

Mine is complete and utter trash, but FurRiffic's works fine. So it depends on your laptop.

The EyeToy's resolution may cause some minor issues (tracking inaccuracy), but from what I can find, the frame rate should be fine (most sources I found say "60" or "60+")

Going with this post and the reviews on Newegg, just picked up a Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam 1080p on ebay for $50. Thanks, guys.

Maybe my girlfriend will do webcam stuff and finally be able to pay me rent.

This. But I still have my CL driver installation before it became paid for.

Having tested out both:

Actual webcams will give you better visual quality, but you'll be hard-pressed to even get a decent 30 FPS out of them, and FPS is obviously the important thing here. They're also a bit pricier.

The Eye on the other hand has awful quality, but a solid 60fps. Theoretically this should mean better performance in FR, although I have yet to see much difference. Even so, the Eye is $10 at a lot of places, which is a lot better than the $40-$80 that "real" webcams go for. So I'd say go for the Eye to start with, and if a webcam eventually emerges that's somehow amazing with the program instead of just ok, you can always switch at that point.

Another +1 for the PS3 eye. They can be had for under $10 with the CL driver for $1.99. 60fps is no problem.

I'm not sure FaceRig is actually running the Eye at 60fps, the video feedback feels 30fps to me (compared to something like the CL-Eye Test utility with the framerate locked to 60, or VDub with same).

Searching the drivers' forums it seems like you need to include a special config file in the same directory as the executable that'll be running the webcam to get 60fps (see here: http://codelaboratories.com/forums/viewthread/117/P10/), however I've not noticed a difference doing so with FR. But then, it's being run through Steam, so who knows how that translates in the back end...
The Playstation 2 EyeToy camera doesn't work--it's max output is 320x200 at 60FPS (might even be 30), too low for Facerig. When I tried using it, Facerig ignored it entirely.

I've been using a Playstation 3 Eye, and it works to an extent--the on-camera mic doesn't seem to be quite high enough quality for lipsync, so I use my Blue Snowball.

There's a "bulk packaging" version of the Eye on Amazon (comes in a plastic bag, no software, no manual) for $7.50 plus shipping. Well worth it.

Just thought I'd add, FaceRig should not ignore something because of its resolution. I've got it to work on a 240p camera, and I don't doubt it would be possible to go lower. That said, it isn't RECOMMENDED to go that low, so you should try avoiding it anyway.
