FaceRig crashes on startup [solved]
Just bought this tool on steam. Crashes at startup every single time. Tried several settings, unplugged stuff, disabled stuff - nothing helped.

I am using a Logitech C920 Pro webcam...

Having the exact same issue here, it's been doing it for about a day now.
The latest update takes out my kernel every time I try to run the program, even in troubleshooting mode. I use Facerig daily, so I'd really like this fixed.

The previous version didn't have anything wrong with it and I've run the same programs alongside it since I bought it, with nothing wrong.

I run alongisde:
Telegram ver 1.2.14
OBS ver 20.1.1
Discord ver 0.0.300

I have to hard reset my PC each time as it just freezes and takes everything with it.

The only way to get the software starting up:

1. Run Elgato Game Capture in Background
2. Start FaceRig
3. FaceRig will start up
4. Ignore "No webcam found" message
5. Have a running but useless (no webcam) software

This is so useless. I think I want my money back...

I think the problem is webcam or webcam-driver related... It works when the camera is "in use" by another software - but with no cam available in FaceRig this is just silly... No response from the devs so far. I don't think a Logitech C920 is a uncommon device!? This cam is a 100 bucks, no cheap crap - so what's the point?

Sorry for the late response. We wanted to test out some scenarios before having an official response.

The crash is indeed camera related, somehow FaceRig does not receive video frames from the camera feed, so it tries "resetting" the camera. A camera reset is basically close and open actions, but when FaceRig sends the close command, the camera (or driver) freezes, so it freezes up FaceRig as well.

This may happen if you have some configuration of direct show filters on your system that do not behave correctly. Some media processes are automated, so the app does not have full control over this.

Logitech c920 is a common device and we actually use it in the office. We also stress tested the camera and found no issues.

One thing you can check is that the AV software isn't blocking any of FaceRig's systems.

Thanks for your reply. I really tried a lot, researched the web and I also uninstalled my anti-virus. It still crashes. It also crashes when I unplug the camera...
Is there a way to "reset" the direct show filters? All my other tools/software are working without issues.

You could try downloading and installing the K-lite codec pack (I might suggest either the Basic or Standard pack).
https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
After it's installed, one of the utilities provided is a Codec Tweak Tool with one of the options that you could enable or disable Direct Show Filters (I have all of mine enabled, and Facerig all other software I use on my computer seems to work fine).
Ok, good luck.

Ok, I do not have any idea what I did - but from today on, FaceRig starts without crashing. I didn't install any code pack, I didn't change anything. It just works now...

By the way: reinstalling the FaceRig Virtual Camera via the included .bat files doesn't work. Had to install it manually via device-manager...
When you get it to work the software is awesome - but there are some weird issues and it seems to be really sensitive depending on which software/hardware you have installed. I hope there will be further improvements!

Sorry for spamming ;). I just realized there has been a windows 10 adobe flash update yesterday... Maybe this fixed it. But I really don't know. Is FaceRig using adobe flash somehow?
Mystix Mar 29, 2018 @ 11:12am
I believe that FaceRig does in part make use of Flash (the version for Chrome I think).
SpielerZwei Mar 29, 2018 @ 11:28am
For Chrome you have to install it manually. There is no Flash for Chrome out-of-the-box. By the way - Flash is dead. When they use it, they should think about something else. I think they are using a sort of middleware (which uses flash)...
