Immortal Chompers at the Lake

The chompers at the Lake won't simply die. They don't seem to have armor and their health bar empty, they initiate their death scream but don't drop dead.

I usually go there heavy, 10 flares for their armor and then shotgun them. I spent 16 shotgun shells and 2 AK magazine and 4 life to realize that they are invincible. This bug maybe triggered by my death right after I used the flares. When I backtrack there none of them had an armor and health. I was be able kill some of them with my axe but other didn't accept even that.
