Shovel or Axe?

I'll cut right to the chase: I basically want to get a better weapon than a rotten two-by-four with rusty nails in it (funny, they seemed to be in perfect condition before I crafted it), but I can't decide whether to buy the shovel or the axe from Wolfman.

I assume the axe does a lot of damage, but the shovel is tempting to me also because of the extra reach its description claims. I don't like going in close, because I usually end up taking almost as much damage as I inflict when in combat.

So: axe or shovel?

On-topic: If you are not good at dodging, then opt for the shovel or stick's reach. If you can dance a merry jig around chompers and savages, then use the axe to cut them down.

Thats a difficult one. It really depends on your playing style, and each one takes a bit of practice to use. The axe is more about precision. It has a fast attack speed, does more damage, but requires a lot of practice to use. In other words, your going to have a difficult time hitting a moving enemy. The shovel on the other hand, is quite the opposite. It has a long reach and wide attack area, but moves slowley, and needs to be timed perfectly to be used successfully. And it's cheaper. So thats a plus.

Honestly, I prefer the shovel just because of how effective it is againsed fast-moving enemies like mutant dogs. But then again, i'm also a very alert player, who examines every corner of the screen before I enter an area, therefore I spot my enemies first, and have time to prepare the shovel before attacking. If someone gets the jump on you, your gonna have a difficult time fighting them off with a shovel. An axe on the other hand, not so much.

So overall...

Axe:
-Requires precision
+Has high damage
+Attacks quickly

Shovel
-Slow attack speed
+Wide area of attack
+Long reach
+$$$$CHEAPER$$$$$

But always remember, each weapon has a unique special attack. (Middle Mouse Button) The axe has a swipe attack and the shovel has a poke attack. USE THEM TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.

Thanks a lot, guys. I think I'll go with the shovel just because of the extra reach, but I might try out the axe if I happen to find one,
