So if I have no light then death by ghost?
I leveled up and got the negative perk that causes ghosts to appear, does that mean that I shouldnt upgrade myself until i can have a steady income of gasoline?

Its kind of frustrating that I barricaded myself at home properly yet some unkillable shadows just appear and kill me, any tips?

Flares work ok too.

I haven't been killed by shadows yet, as I've had flares on hand since day two. I'd imagine that one could survive till dawn by just spamming bandages/healing items (they don't do too much damage) without having light.

Well, this has been changed since Alpha 4.0, which just got realeased some days ago.
If you have not tried it I recommend it to 10000%

I am playing in the latest build btw, ghosts still kill me in the dark

Natural light like torch and lantern dont work during shadow event.

use flares, or flash light to scare the shadows away.

edit: during the shadow event, lights in the house will flicker off....

I do like the new shadows system. Mainly because it adds actual value to the flashlight, where as in previous updates it was basically something I just sold to vendors.

My lights went off and I waved a military flashlight at them and they still came along and duppied me. This just seems like the game being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and unavoidably docking you life.

They seem to be trying to make you do more stuff during the night, but without some actual storyline events, there still doesn't seem to be any reason to do anything else but lock yourself in with a lamp and wait for night to be over

Gasoline and flashlights are very hard to come by, The fact that you need them to survive at night even when in a safe setup with traps around you makes bad gameplay

There's flares. Quite common, and you only need 1 per night. I also find flashlights in fixed locations, and you can reload them with batteries.

I think this is their way of getting vengence on all the fruniture abuse too. Seriously, it's like... perfect for that.

Flashlights are hard to come by, batteries are not. Also you only need them, what, only one of every three nights or so? If you're not using them then you're just wasting them.

It doesn't really stop it. You can just pop flares inside your hiding place.

IMO the only way to stop furniture abuse is to improve mobs' intelligence and pathing abilities (allowing them to destroy furniture the player is hiding behind)

There's actually a way to kill them: If you manage to point a military flashlight long enough at them, they should disappear. Have not tested much, or with the normal flashlight.
