It's hard to find something that ticks all the same boxes that darkwood does but there are a few threads in this forum that have made lists of 'similar' type games. It's worth searching for those threads for those suggestions.

I too am always on the lookout for the next great survival horror game, top down or otherwise (just anything 'darkwood-like') but I keep getting disappointed..

..like recently I tried Signalis, it's great visually, sounds great to, great atmosphere/tone/style.. but, it just falls short in the most important areas such as combat, interesting inventory/resource management and replayability.. and there really is no excuse for failing to produce a game that delivers mechanically in those key areas of gameplay especially now that Acid Wizard has shown everyone how it can, and should, be done..

..so I guess Darkwood is still pretty unique at this moment in time, it is the standout classic, and maybe that's a great thing. Other classic top down survival horrors will eventually come along.

Not to many like darkwood actually, there's a few on steam. Razenroth is similar in control and atmosphere but its more of an action rpg. Goes on sell cheap and has a sequel but I like the first one best.

If you want a really oldschool top down game with oppressive horror atmosphere there's also blood omen legacy of kain which is about a psychotic vampire who was assassinated and is bent on revenge. Lots of blood and dark gothic atmosphere.

If you are talking about games with similar abstract atmosphere, but not top down like DW, just similar in design, I could recommend pathologic1/2, shadowman, amnesia, and the visual novel series on steam disturbed. I also really like the Silent Hill series. As far as horror goes it takes a little more abstract artistic imagination to get as good as darkwood and there is quite a few that tap into that feeling. I strongly recommend shadowman and pathologic 2 of my fav horror games next to darkwood.

Resident evil is of course a good series, but I'm sure you've heard of that one.

I looking for a game like darkwood too. I love scary night survival mechanism, that atmosphere, crafting and 2D.

Two games I recall having the same control scheme and a similar artstyle were these old Dead Frontier "demos" from back when it was still 2D and top-down, you could find on old flashgame sites like addictinggames. In the same vein, I guess there's also the SAS: Zombie Assault series, though those tend to be more action horror and shooter styled. I think the 4th on is on here, but if anything, it's more like Dead Space.

Hi! I can recommend one of these games is The Last Cargo. It's very similar to Darkwood, but only similar... It's as unique as Darkwood. But the project itself is much smaller..

I found Signalis to be a very good and similar experience though it has a completely different setting and atmosphere.

cataclysm dark days ahead is good but it's like super hardcore and needs toe outstanding sound design of this game other then that its probably the closest thing and it's massive.

Eh, not really. C:DDA is very good, but it's not that similar, C:DDA is a turn based ASCII Roguelite survival sandbox game, at time it can feel similar but it plays VERY differently.
Either way it's still very much worth checking out and it's completely free to play.
