I too am always on the lookout for the next great survival horror game, top down or otherwise (just anything 'darkwood-like') but I keep getting disappointed..
..like recently I tried Signalis, it's great visually, sounds great to, great atmosphere/tone/style.. but, it just falls short in the most important areas such as combat, interesting inventory/resource management and replayability.. and there really is no excuse for failing to produce a game that delivers mechanically in those key areas of gameplay especially now that Acid Wizard has shown everyone how it can, and should, be done..
..so I guess Darkwood is still pretty unique at this moment in time, it is the standout classic, and maybe that's a great thing. Other classic top down survival horrors will eventually come along.
If you want a really oldschool top down game with oppressive horror atmosphere there's also blood omen legacy of kain which is about a psychotic vampire who was assassinated and is bent on revenge. Lots of blood and dark gothic atmosphere.
If you are talking about games with similar abstract atmosphere, but not top down like DW, just similar in design, I could recommend pathologic1/2, shadowman, amnesia, and the visual novel series on steam disturbed. I also really like the Silent Hill series. As far as horror goes it takes a little more abstract artistic imagination to get as good as darkwood and there is quite a few that tap into that feeling. I strongly recommend shadowman and pathologic 2 of my fav horror games next to darkwood.
Resident evil is of course a good series, but I'm sure you've heard of that one.

Hey thanks a lot man this game looks cool love the whole hazy dark atmosphere. Will definitely check this one out sometime.
More like tim burton.
Either way it's still very much worth checking out and it's completely free to play.
I love that series
