I know a lot of players like to combine dodge (jump backwards) with attacks or use combos that lead with a weak attack followed by a heavy attack (or vice versa), but really you can just wind up full heavy attacks for every strike and move left/right for evasion (instead of the dodge function). Stamina management makes the combat so interesting.
I like how some weapons are better suited for different situations but at the same time you can pretty much use any weapon for any situation (it just might not be as optimal).
I would get tired of using the same weapon to deal with every type of threat so I constantly mix it up and use everything because it's really fun to use throwables & firearms in combination with melee attacks (& traps of course).
For melee, well timed shovel swings are very satisfying but I usually main the axe, just for it's efficiency and all round attributes (at point blank range its like a sickle and a shotgun all in one). It's good to break the pitchfork out occasionally to kite & control enemies (board with nails becomes obsolete very early but is needed to bridge the gap to the next tier of weapons).
Sickles were obviously added as a way of combating banshee babies but there are other ways to deal with them, that said, I should use the sickle (& knife) more often but I usually end up using them as tradeable items and default to axe/pistol/throwable/shotty loadouts..
Pistol being the main stay all purpose weapon, alongside interchangeable weapons such as.. Rifle for daytime hunting (in open area), shotty for base defence at night (room clearance), molotovs for daytime usage (area clearance), gas bottles for nighttime usage (doesn't cause fire damage.. unless you throw a flare on them, which is a good option to have).
I feel if loot was more random (i.e, if the availability of items to buy from the daily traders was reduced) I think it would force me to use things like the sickle & knife (and even rocks) more often (to conserve on resources that the other weapons require).
Knives are versatile, it always seems a shame to sell them. I think a way of bringing knives more into the the gameplay would be to make them an early game weapon (instead of mid to late, which is when they start appearing.. everyone is maining things like upgraded shovels & pistols by this stage).
I've been hoarding AK ammo unsure of when to use it (this is my first play through, in the swamp right now).
I wish knives could be duck taped to a staff as a better alternative to the pitch fork.
Pistol is a daily carry.
Shotgun is a daily carry and used on centipedes and chompers
How many clips you find depends on how thorough you scavenge, there are clips that are preset loot (in the same crates for every playthrough) and some clips that can spawn randomly (if a crate or pile is assigned to spawn a random ammo type). Thorough scavenging will yield a double digit amount of clips (10+).
Luckily there are some hardcore locations and/or events in chapter 2 in which the AK could come in handy so find some situations worthy of a spraying rampage, have some fun with it, don't be afraid to use up that precious ammo (it's a luxury item) you can always go back to maining shotty/pistol if you run out of AK.
It never leaves my hotbar, I need all the distance I can get … until shotguns become an option
